Aaron Pierre has had quite a run. In 2024 his impressive performance on Netflix “Rebel Back” puts a spotlight on Hollywood in a way that doesn’t happen often – the kind of breakout that makes people go back and re-examine everything an actor has done, and suddenly see possibilities they weren’t sure were there before. Since then, the roles have rapidly escalated: “The Morning Show”, voice work “Mufasa: The Lion King,” and above all: the leading role “Lanterns,” DC Studios’ first live-action television series for HBO. Now, before that show has even premiered, Pierre is already heading to the big screen in the same role.
Aaron Pierre will reprise his role as Green Lantern John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow. that of James Gunn sequel to 2025 “Superman,” the film is expected to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. The casting confirms something DC fans have been watching closely: that the new DCU is truly building a connected universe where television and film exist within the same story, not just the same brand. Pierre moving so quickly from HBO to James Gunn’s sequel is the clearest signal yet that DC means business this time.

For those not deep into DC history, John Stewart is one of the most important figures in Green Lantern history. The character was first introduced in comics in 1971 and became the main Green Lantern for an entire generation of fans through the early 2000s animated Justice League series and its sequel, Justice League Unlimited. He is not a sidekick or support player. He is one of the most prominent members of the Green Lantern Corps, the intergalactic peacekeeping force that patrols the universe using power rings powered by willpower.
In “Lanterns,” Pierre plays Stewart as a recruit to the force and learns the tricks of the trade from veteran Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. The series follows the two as intergalactic agents become involved in a murder investigation in the American heartland, which slowly unravels a much larger conspiracy tied to the broader DC Universe. The show will premiere in August 2026, meaning audiences will first be introduced to Pierre’s John Stewart on television and then see him step into Superman’s orbit on the big screen. It’s an unusually elegant piece of narrative architecture for a studio that has historically struggled to make its moving parts work together.
What the people of tomorrow build
The plot of Man of Tomorrow revolves around an uneasy alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor as they join forces against the technological alien threat of Brainiac, played by a German actor. Lars Eidinger. Gunn has spoken about how both characters represent different sides of the same coin, and the tension between Clark Kent’s midwestern idealism and Lex’s obsessive ambition forms the emotional core of the film.
The returning cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eva Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Maria Gabriella de Faria as The Engineer. Pierre’s John Stewart fits naturally into this world. As Gunn himself noted, the character’s appearance makes tonal sense, as both Superman and Brainiac have alien origins, and a spacefaring Green Lantern operating in the same interstellar register isn’t a problem. There are also reports that a secondary female antagonist named Maxima will be added to the cast, after early speculation about a Wonder Woman appearance was debunked directly by Gunn.
The bigger picture for Aaron Pierre and the DCU

Pierre’s trajectory over the past two years has been striking to watch. In addition to his DC obligations, he is also engaged by Shawn Levy expectant “Star Wars: Starfighter,” making him one of the most in-demand actors currently working in major franchise films. He simultaneously possesses two of popular culture’s greatest traits, and based on the evidence of Rebel Ridge, the trust placed in him seems well-founded.
For the DCU, its casting “Man of Tomorrow” represents something beyond the luck of one actor. The one released in 2025 “Superman” earned critical acclaim and $615 million worldwide, giving Gunn a real foundation to build on. It’s an ambitious move to bring Pierre’s John Stewart from Lanterns directly into that world before the television show has even aired. It bets on target groups that invest in both at the same time. If it works, it will provide a template for how DC’s interconnected stories can actually function at scale. It looks like Pierre got a pretty important part of that experiment to take with him.
