Lionel Richie Has Something To Say

There are few artists in music right now generating as much conversation as Chappell Roan. Some of it is about the music. A lot of it is about everything else. The Grammy-winning singer has been one of the most polarizing figures in pop over the past two years — celebrated for her fearlessness and criticized for what some see as an increasingly difficult relationship with the people who made her famous. Her latest controversy has attracted a football star, an actor, a hotel, a mayor and now, indirectly, a music legend. And it all started during a hotel breakfast in São Paulo.

Against that background, Lionel Richie sat down with his son-in-law, Joel Maddenfor the Artist Friendly podcast and shared the kind of perspective that only comes from five decades in the spotlight. He did not mention Chappell Roan by name. That wasn’t necessary. His words were right after all.

What happened in Sao Paulo

Roan was in Brazil for Lollapalooza Brazil, which was held at the Autódromo de Interlagos in São Paulo from March 20 to 22. Chance, Ada Lawactor’s 11-year-old daughter Judas Law and British singer Catherine Hardingstayed with her mother in the same five-star hotel in Tangará Palace. The trip was a birthday present for Ada, who was a fan of Roan.

What happened next is where accounts begin to diverge. According to Ada’s stepfather, a Brazilian footballer JorginhoThe girl saw Roan at breakfast, walked past her table to confirm it was really her, smiled, and returned to sit with her mother. She didn’t say a word. She didn’t ask for a photo. What followed, according to Jorginho, was a security guard who approached their table and spoke in an extremely aggressive manner, accusing the girl of disrespect and intimidation, and threatening to file a complaint with the hotel as Ada sat there in tears.

Jorginho took to Instagram and tagged Roan directly. He wrote in capital letters: “WITHOUT YOUR FANS YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS THEY DO NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION.”

Roan did not remain silent. In an Instagram Story posted after her Lollapalooza set, she denied any involvement. She said she saw no woman or child. No one approached her. No one bothered her. She didn’t order any guards to talk to them. And she also apologized to Ada and her mother for the experience, saying they didn’t deserve it.

Days later, the security guard at the center of the incident identified himself. Pascal Duvier posted a statement on Instagram taking full responsibility for what happened. He confirmed that he was not part of Roan’s personal security team and that he was at the hotel on behalf of someone else. He said he made a judgment based on the information he received from the hotel and the events he witnessed in recent days, and acknowledged that the outcome was regrettable.

That should have settled the matter. That largely didn’t happen. The Tangará Palace issued a statement clarifying that the hotel was not involved in the situation, which many read on social media as the hotel quietly sided with Jorginho’s family. Catherine Harding, for her part, said she was willing to accept that Roan might not have sent the guard himself. But she was firm on one point. Celebrities, she said, are responsible for the behavior of people who act on their behalf — whether they are formally employed by them or not. “Would he do that if he didn’t have the authority to do that? I don’t know,” Harding said.

The incident in Brazil did not come out of nowhere. Chappell Roan has been publicly and loudly navigating the tension between fame and personal boundaries for more than two years. In August 2024, she posted about the uncomfortable attention she’d been receiving, and drew a clear line around whether or not she was putting herself out there. Roan told me BBC she always stood up for herself and joked that she might be more successful if she wore a muzzle. She confronted a photographer at a film premiere asking how she felt she had been treated at a previous event. She clashed with fans who she felt were overstepping the boundaries.

Each incident added a layer to the public image that is truly difficult to read. Some see an artist protecting himself in an industry that has historically eaten people. Others see someone who has confused the right to boundaries with the right to be inaccessible. Ultimately, the truth probably lies somewhere between the two, and that’s what makes Lionel Richie’s timing so sharp.

What Lionel Richie said

Richie, 76, didn’t mention Chappell Roan on the Artist Friendly podcast. He was talking about his own career, his own relationship with fans, and what he believes separates the artists that survive from those that die out. But his words spoke directly to the conversation the internet had been having all week.

“I always tell people: what comes with success are sacrifices,” he said. “I hope you love people. Because if you don’t love people, this is what it’s going to sound like. You spend the first half of your career going, ‘Look at me, look at me, look at me.’ And then you finally become famous. ‘Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me. ”

He reduced his own approach to something personal. ‘I was once invisible’ he said. “There is someone who is terrified of you. They want to say something to you. You can see it in their face. If I were to ignore them, it would be the worst.” He also warned about reputations, worded in a specific way that only someone who has seen careers collapse from within could articulate it. “You know what fast travels? That guy was a crazy dk.”

He didn’t mention anyone. The Internet named someone after him.

Roan’s representative confirmed that she has zero tolerance for aggressive behavior towards fans and that she holds her teams to the highest standards. Meanwhile, Pascal Duvier has taken responsibility and confirmed that he acted independently. The hotel has distanced itself. Ada’s birthday trip to São Paulo ended without her seeing the show. Roan has apologized.

Whether this is the end of the conversation or just another chapter in a longer story about what Chappell Roan owes her audience is a question without a clear answer. Richie has been in the industry since before most of her fans were born, and his stance is clear. The people who continue to show up for you are not a liability. They are the reason the whole thing works at all. Five seconds to say thank you. That’s his formula. It doesn’t require a guard. There is no need for a policy. You just have to decide early and clearly what kind of artist you want to be remembered as.
