Throughout many eras of makeup fashion, matte skin has gone in and out of fashion. It’s definitely one of my favorite looks. As an ’80s artist, I absolutely love a seamless matte complexion with pops of vibrant color. However, the ongoing problem has always been how to create and maintain such a skin tone without completely traumatizing the skin. This is because traditional mattifying products tend to dry out the skin and clog pores.
Does matte makeup dry out the skin?
From the early days of stage makeup, where huge powder puffs full of talcum powders were slapped onto the skin, anyone who wore it felt the constant yo-yo from dry to oily extremes all day long. And the more powder we used, the more our skin returned to a shiny, oily state.
In the 1980s, some of the biggest makeup brands started releasing matte liquids or creams–Unpleasant–powder foundations and that started a whole new set of problems. When you first apply it, your face feels so tight and dry that you think it’s going to crack. Halfway through the day you were shiny and greasy again. It is not surprising that such results were the norm of the time, given the technology we had to work with at the time.
The simple truth is that any product that aims for a long-lasting mattifying effect using drying ingredients is doomed to failure. This is because the skin is a living respiratory organ that can sense when it is running out of moisture. Our body’s natural response to drying ingredients is to remove oil to compensate for dryness. It creates a cycle of oiliness and a need for mattification that never ends. But in doing so, we always clog the pores, making the complexion look heavy or cakey.
The good news is that our industry has evolved and brands are not only starting to develop new ways to control shine, but are also finding ways to do it without completely destroying the skin. Of course, it‘That’s no surprise Jane Iredale the original Skincare Makeup was at the forefront of this movement.
Mattifying primer that controls shine Without drying
This year we’re excited to present the latest in matte technology with an extraordinary new primer called Smooth Affair Mattering. The truly amazing thing about this primer isn’t just how effectively it controls shine. It’s how the formula actually improves skin texture and health while creating a beautiful matte finish makeup lookwe’ve all been there to searchfor.
The Key to Smooth Affair Mattifying Facial primeris the highly effective ingredient list.
- We start with Hibiscus extract that supports skin elasticity and prevents water loss. This compound is also excellent for improving the skin’s natural repair process and giving it a more youthful appearance.
- We then add Rose Geranium Leaf Extract, which helps protect and repair the skin against UV damage and provides powerful antioxidant protection.
- But the most important ingredient for matting is red algae extract. Red algae not only helps regulate sebum production, but also supports the skin’s natural oil-moisture ratio for an even, matte appearance.
- We also use titanium dioxide, which helps to create a flawless finish.
OIn addition to the therapeutic benefits of the ingredients we use, this formula also provides excellent wear for those sensitive or responsive to traditional primers, as we naturally leave out all the top sensitizers from traditional primers. What remains is performance like you’ve never seen before. We think you’ll really love the way it looks and feels on your skin.
