When you think of Europe, chances are you think of places like Rome, with its imposing Colosseum and open-air museum with a historic center, or Paris, with its Haussmann-designed grid-like cityscape and towering Eiffel.

I live in Paris myself and I go to Rome at least twice a year, so don’t get me wrong, these are truly some of the most beautiful, inherently fascinating capitals of the Old Continent.

Be that as it may, big European cities aren’t necessarily the best choice if it’s that idyllic medieval charm and slow-paced life that you’ve idealized.

Yes, there’s the odd ancient monument here and there, and there’s no doubt that the museums are world-class, but between the buzzing traffic and the strange, ugly skyscraper looming in the distance,It doesn’t exactly feel… compelling.

If you’re looking for that fairytale, time-traveling feeling, this is just the place for you:

Is Ljubljana the ultimate European city?

Nestled in its cozy Middle Eastern? European corner, Ljubljana is actually a small city with big city responsibilities.

It is the capital, cultural heart and administrative center of Slovenia, a small country in the Old World that most first-time and even repeat visitors to Europe completely ignore… even though it is home to some of the most beautiful, absolutely breathtaking mountain landscapes.

Anyway, we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves here.

With just under 300,000 inhabitants, Ljubljana is as we like to call it a pocket-sized cultural powerhouse: It’s a capital city for sure, but it feels more like one of those Disney-esque riverside fairytales you see on the cover of a storybook.

No, there’s no big Roman arena here – too far north of the Alps for that – but we do have the Triple Bridge?

A stunner of a bridge complex designed by local architect Jože Plečnik, it is a trio of graceful, stone pedestrian crossings over the fast-flowing Ljubljanica River.

They meet the riverside promenade at both ends and connect the ‘newer’ city, which is still quite old by American standards, with the castle district.

In reality, from Ljubljana whole schtik are actually whimsical bridges.

Next to the Triple Bridge you’ll find the other Plečnik-signed Cobbler’s Bridge, known for its wide stone pillars and wide, open design, and the Dragon Bridge, an Art Nouveau offering guarded by terrifying dragon statues.

My favorite thing about Ljubljana?

Whether it’s during the day, when the city center is bustling with passers-by and day trippers from Italy: you can actually have a directly train from Trieste to Ljubljana – or at night, when the 19th century lamp lights cast eerie shadows on wet cobblestones, I never once felt unsafe or tense.

Ljubljana couldn’t be safer if it tried

Ljubljana is one of the safest capitals across the pond, thanks to an excellent track record of keeping petty theft and religious extremism at bay, which now plague much of Western Europe, and a virtual absence of violent crime.

It’s a Level 1 destination according to the official advice of the US Department of State, and if you don’t give .gov the time of day, you can trust the people. Vox populi, vox dei.

Slovenia scores an impressive 86 out of 100 on the Traveler Safety Index, based on reports from travelers who actually been to the place – ahem, maybe I contributed to the current rate myself?

Can we talk about those epic rooftop terraces?

Bridges aside, you can’t miss the Central Market, where you’ll find an abundance of local produce, from Alpine cheeses and honey to Slovenian specialties like Carniolan sausage and Karst prosciutto, Slovenian answer to Italian.

As you head deeper into the old town, towards the castle, it’s all about cobbled streets, well-maintained Habsburg facades, pastel facades and cute little cafes, ideal for a wine stop, or sipping some coffee while people watching at your leisure.

Looking for the best viewpoint in the city?

Take the funicular to Ljubljana Castle, the huge medieval fortress overlooking the tiled roofs of the old town, or if you’re looking for that postcard-perfect view of the city, castle includedthe Nebotičnik roof café is the money maker.

However, before you proceed with booking these flights, make sure you do a quick destination check beforehand on the Entry Requirement Checker page.

Europe is tightening its entry rules significantly this year, and from the already imposed mandatory fingerprinting to the upcoming ETIAS, a travel authorization that will soon apply to US travelers, you’ll want to stay on top of the ever-changing regulations.

Explore Slovenia beyond the capital

Ljubljana is also the perfect base to explore Slovenia as a whole.

Lake Bled is possibly the most photographed lake in all of Europe, with its iconic church on an island right in the center and a castle on the mountaintop. A short 34 mile drive outside of the city.

Just as beautiful, but slightly more unusual, Lake Bohinj offers quieter promenades, snow-capped peaks and peaceful waterside retreats. Another 53 miles.

Fancy a relaxing beach holiday?

Believe it or not, Slovenia claims a short coastline of 46 kilometers along the Mediterranean Sea and beyond Piran (110 km south of the capital) you can expect a Venetian-style holiday resort with narrow streets, Italian-style buildings, green shutters and all, and epic sunset views for days.

Slovenia proves you don’t need size to deliver serious storybook magic: from Alpine jewels to sun-drenched Adriatic towns, it’s Europe in miniature done right.
