The U.S. Embassy has issued a new warning to all Americans traveling south of the border to Mexico this summer. Border security will be tighter than ever and stricter inspections will be in place for the next five weeks as Mexico hosts the World Cup. With millions of international visitors flooding into the country, customs agents at all major airports and land crossings are on high alert. Whether you’re flying down for a relaxing week at an all-inclusive resortExploring historic downtown neighborhoods or attending major sporting events, you’ll encounter huge crowds and incredibly strict bag checks.

If you’re packing for a summer vacation, you need to be well aware of what’s in your suitcase. There are specific items that can get you into big trouble at the border. Authorities are currently not issuing warnings or second chances. If you break the rules, even accidentally, you risk severe penalties, huge financial fines or actual prison sentences.

Here are the three most important items you should absolutely leave at home, plus a few extra tips to make your summer vacation completely worry-free.

1. Weapons and ammunition are strictly prohibited

First of all, don’t bring any guns or ammunition into Mexico. This may sound like common sense to most beachgoers, but it’s a huge problem for a surprising number of regular travelers who drive or fly across the border with bags that they regularly use home to hunt or go to the shooting range.

Bringing a weapon or ammunition into the country is a very serious crime. It makes absolutely no difference whether you have a valid concealed carry permit in your home state, and it doesn’t matter if you are a very responsible owner in the United States. US gun ownership permits mean absolutely nothing once you enter Mexican territory. If customs officials find a gun or even one stray bullet at the bottom of your backpack, you risk severe legal penalties and an immediate trip to a local jail. The border agents won’t listen to excuses, so leave all protection at home under lock and key.

2. Leave your special recipes

The second important warning concerns drug possession and importation. You absolutely cannot bring illegal substances into the country, and this strictly speaking also applies to medical marijuana.

Even if you live in a US state where marijuana is fully legalized for recreational use, and even if you have a legitimate doctor-issued medical license, it is highly illegal to bring it into Mexico. The border agents don’t care about the local laws in California, New York or Colorado. Getting caught bringing in any form of marijuana – whether flower, edibles, gummies or concentrated oils – can easily lead to long prison sentences or devastating financial penalties.

Don’t try to hide it in your checked luggage as the scanning equipment and dog units are very active at the moment due to the huge summer crowds. If you need specific daily medications, make sure your basic prescriptions are actually legal south of the border before packing them. We flew into Mexico City yesterday and we have never seen customs this strict. Several dogs sniffed each bag, while dozens of travelers had their bags inspected.

3. The complete ban on vapes and e-cigarettes

This is the specific rule that completely catches the most mundane travelers off guard. It is completely illegal to bring e-cigarettes and vaping liquids into Mexico.

The country passed a strict federal ban on the import and sale of all vaping products a few years ago. If you pack your favorite vape pen or a few extra flavor pods in your carry-on luggage, customs agents will flag them during your luggage scan. At best, they’ll just throw your expensive vaporizer in the trash and give you a stern warning. Worst case scenario, you’ll be faced with a huge fine in the terminal before you even reach the airport shuttle. Do yourself a big favor and leave the e-cigarettes on your counter at home. Recent traveler reports to Travel Off Path list fines of up to $400.

Make sure you comply with the latest customs regulations on what you can and cannot bring into Mexico.

Check every bag

The excuse of “I forgot it was in there” will never save you from trouble. You should thoroughly check your bags, backpacks and garment bags before leaving for the airport.

If you’re using a specific backpack for hunting or heading out into the wild, make absolutely sure there isn’t a stray shell hidden in a side pocket. If you normally carry a vape in your favorite jacket, check the pockets before putting it in your suitcase. Bringing in prohibited items will result in severe penalties, even if it was a completely honest accident. Customs agents only look at what is actually in your bag as it goes through the X-ray machine.

Taking the time to completely empty your luggage before you start packing is the smartest move you can make. Shake out your backpacks, check the hidden compartments and look through every zipper. It sounds annoying, but it is the only way to guarantee that you do not accidentally bring a prohibited item across the border.

Additional actions to take for a safe trip

In addition to the list of prohibited items, there are some important actions every traveler should take to smoothly navigate the enormous crowds this summer.

Make sure you check the latest news Travel advisories and warnings for your destination before going to the airport.

First, check your passport right now. Make sure it is not expired and is in good condition as you will not be able to board an international flight without it.

Next, limit the amount of cash you carry. When you need to withdraw money, be extremely careful and completely avoid using isolated street ATMs. Stick to ATMs in secure banks or in your resort lobby, where security is present. When it comes to getting around the city, only use official airport taxi ranks or trusted app-based services to avoid transportation fraud.

Tell your friends and family about your travel plans, especially if you are traveling alone. Sharing your flight details and hotel reservations gives everyone peace of mind. If you rent a car to explore outside the resort zones, make it a strict rule to only drive during the day.

Finally, if your summer plans take you to the beautiful beaches of Quintana Roo such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or Cozumel, download the official app “Guest Assist”. This app is specially designed for tourists and gives you instant access to emergency services and reliable help in English.

The next few weeks will be an incredible time to visit Mexico. Pack smart, double check your bags and prepare for the trip of a lifetime. You can read the full warning by US embassy here.
