The ultimate safe havenWhy El Tunco is the perfect seaside resortThe ultimate base camp for adventureHow to get there before the crowds do

Over the past decade, I’ve watched some of my absolute favorite beach towns in Central America slowly turn into huge, overpriced tourist traps.

It usually happens in exactly the same way: a quiet surf town is ‘discovered’, the huge mega-resorts come in, the prices triple, and suddenly you’re fighting 500 people over a plastic lounge chair.

When I get back home and map out the next coastal escape, my goal is to actively avoid that entire cycle. I want destinations that are wildly authentic, very affordableand above all, completely safe.

Historically, finding that perfect combination required a brutal day of travel. You had to endure tiring layovers, navigate terrifying dirt roads or take a ten-hour overnight bus to reach a beach not paved by commercialization.

But major airlines are aggressively launching nonstop routes that bypass the chaotic hubs entirely, putting you on the doorstep of the region’s best-kept secrets.

If you want to trade the busy, commercialized strips of Tamarindo and the huge resorts of Cancun for raw authenticity and perfect waves, you should look at El Salvador.

Specifically, you should go to the coastal town of El Tunco.

The ultimate safe haven

Let’s first discuss the elephant in the room: El Salvador’s reputation. If you’re working based on outdated information from ten years ago, you may hesitate. But the country has undergone a complete, unprecedented transformation, making it perhaps the safest country in the entire Western Hemisphere.

The safety turnaround has been so significant and effective that… US Department of State currently El Salvador is giving a Safety advice level 1. That’s their absolute lowest risk category, putting this tropical surfing paradise at exactly the same safety level as places like Iceland or Japan.

The boots-on-the-ground reality matches the assessment perfectly our safety index gives it a score of 91/100! You can spend your evenings wandering El Tunco’s vibrant, mural-covered dirt roads, hopping between open-air beach bars and street food carts without ever having to constantly look over your shoulder.

The peace of mind here is completely unparalleled.

Why El Tunco is the perfect seaside resort

When you imagine El Tunco, completely erase any mental image of towering hotels and sprawling designer shopping plazas. This is a pure, unpretentious surfer’s paradise. The town takes its name from a huge, iconic rock formation just off the coast (which locals say resembles a pig, or tunco).

  • The atmosphere: The streets are narrow, walkable and lined with colorful street art, cheap coastal hostelsand boutique eco-lodges. TThe atmosphere is incredibly relaxed. It’s the kind of place where wearing shoes is completely optional, and the daily schedule revolves entirely around the ocean tides.
  • World-class surfing: Even if you’ve never touched a surfboard, you’ll appreciate the surf culture here. The beaches are defined by their dramatic, dark volcanic sand. If you do ride, you’ll have immediate access to La Bocana, a legendary fast left-hand break, and Sunzal, a longer, smoother ride perfect for longboarders. It’s fascinating to just sit on the shore with my camera and photograph the locals carving the afternoon waves.
  • An incredible food scene: The culinary scene here completely skips the expensive, manufactured dining rooms. It’s all about rustic, incredible local flavor. You absolutely can’t leave the country without eating your weight in traditional pupusas: thick, handmade corn tortillas filled with melted cheese, baked beans, and savory pork chicharrón, served with spicy coleslaw (curtido). Sitting on a wooden bench on the beach and eating a huge pile of hot pupusas for three dollars as the sun sets is the epitome of travel.

The ultimate base camp for adventure

El Tunco is amazing in its own right, but it also serves as the absolutely perfect base for exploring the rest of the country’s breathtaking Pacific coastline.

If you need a break from the salty water, take a short trek through the surrounding jungle to explore the… Tamanique Waterfalls. It’s a rugged, steep hike through the dense tropical canopy that rewards you with a series of spectacular rushing waterfalls and deep natural pools.

For the adrenaline junkies, there are several epic cliff jumping spots that drop straight into the crystal clear waters below.

You can also rent a car or take a fast shuttle to explore the rest of the famous ‘Surf City’ route, which winds along the coastal cliffs to discover even quieter, more isolated black-sand coves like El Zonte (often called ‘Bitcoin Beach’ because the local economy runs heavily on cryptocurrency).

How to get there before the crowds do

For a generation, El Tunco felt completely cut off from the casual American travel market. It used to take brutal routes with multiple stops to reach it. That barrier to entry is officially gone.

Airlines such as Avianca, United, American and Delta now operate direct, nonstop flights from major hubs in the United States directly to El Salvador International Airport (SAL) in San Salvador. Connectivity is better than ever before.

Once you land, you don’t even have to navigate a chaotic, busy capital anymore. Thanks to the country’s massive new infrastructure projects, just hop on the new Surf City bypass. It’s a fast, beautiful, modern 45 minute highway ride from the tarmac straight to the ocean.

The secret is officially out and the chance to experience El Tunco while still feeling like an undiscovered, quiet coastal secret is closing in. If you want a completely safe, culturally rich, and completely unforgettable Central American trip, it’s time to pack your bags.
