If you’re getting ready for a Mexican summer vacation, you already know the drill.

You want to spend your days drinking margaritas by the pool, eating incredible street tacos, and soaking up the sun, without constantly looking over your shoulder or worrying about your safety.

When you start researching your trip, you’ll likely come across official government advisories, which often paint states or entire countries with broad, intimidating brushstrokes. But if you look strictly at the government’s warnings, you only see half the story.

The reality of international travel is that safety is very local. What happens in a border town has absolutely nothing to do with the atmosphere at a luxury beach resort hundreds of miles away.

That’s why we rely on our Traveler Safety Index. Instead of relying on a black-box algorithm or a blanket government warning, this index uses a hybrid verification model based on pure human intelligence. It measures real-time safety directly from thousands of verified travelers who actively vote after returning home from their trip. These scores reflect the broad, practical experiences of real touristswith multiple layers of editorial review to filter out bots and manipulation.

If you want a completely stress-free trip this summer, these are here five huge Mexican destinations that officially pass the safety test with flying colors, including one look transparently at what exactly travelers mark.

Cabo San Lucas (94/100)

Cape San Lucas currently officially takes the crown as the safest destination in Mexico. With a huge sample size of 1,061 recent traveler votes, it has a near-perfect score of 94 out of 100.

The atmosphere: It’s the ultimate luxury desert-meets-ocean playground. You’ll spend your days on luxury yachts, eating world-class seafood and enjoying some of the most exclusive resorts on the continent.

The reality: Of the more than a thousand tourists, the The biggest concern reported was ‘scams’ with a total of only 9 reports. If you look carefully, these are not dangerous situations. These are almost exclusively classic tourist traps, such as bait and switch boat trips along the marina or very aggressive timeshare places.

The move: Stick to booking your catamaran tours and excursions directly through your hotel concierge or a verified online platform, and you will have a flawless, incredibly safe vacation.

Cancun (92/100)

Cancun is the undisputed heavyweight champion of Mexican tourism, and the data proves it can handle the sheer crowds perfectly. It has by far the largest sample size on our list, with 1,822 travelers contributing to an incredible safety score of 92 out of 100.

The atmosphere: It’s the classic, energetic Caribbean escape. From huge all-inclusive resorts in the Hotel Zone to crystal clear waters and elite nightlife, Cancun is built entirely for tourist fun.

The reality: If you let almost two thousand people vote, you’re bound to get a few complaints. The biggest concern was here too ‘Scam’, which generated 36 reports. While 36 may seem like a lot in a vacuum, statistically it is a small percentage of total visitors. These reports are almost universally traced back to high taxi fares at the airport or aggressive baggage handlers trying to force a tip. The physical security in the Hotel Zone is very strong.

The move: Never hail a random taxi from the street. Pre-book your airport transfer before you leave your home, and use verified transportation apps like Uber if you need to leave the resort.

San José del Cabo (92/100)

Located just up the highway from the energetic party scene of Cabo San Lucas, the quieter sister city of San Jose del Cabo fits in perfectly with its neighbor with a great safety score of 92 out of 100 based on 461 traveler votes.

The atmosphere: This is where you go if you really want to relax. It’s very walkable, famously artsy, and features a beautiful historic town square filled with incredible boutique restaurants and galleries.

The reality: The The biggest concern flagged by travelers was once again ‘scams’ with only 6 isolated reports. Because San José is so walkable and laid-back, the only real annoyance tourists encounter are the overly persistent street vendors trying to sell souvenirs or the occasional timeshare rep who refuses to take ‘no’ for an answer.

The move: A polite but firm “no, thank you” as you walk through is sufficient. Enjoy Thursday evening’s Art Walk and incredible farm-to-table food scene without any worries.

Playa del Carmen (91/100)

Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen has exploded in popularity, growing from a sleepy fishing village into a major international hub. It holds strong with a safety score of 91 out of 100 divided over 517 votes.

The atmosphere: It’s incredibly trendy, very walkable and completely centered around the famous 5th Avenue, a huge pedestrian street lined with bars, restaurants and shops just steps from the beach.

The reality: Because Playa del Carmen is known for its vibrant nightlifethe biggest concern travelers experienced was ‘Drugging’, with 9 reports. While that word understandably raises eyebrows, the number is small compared to the city’s 517 votes, and reflects the standard binge drinking warning that applies to every major entertainment venue in the world.

The move: This is about exercising basic, common sense on the streets. When you go to the clubs on 5th Avenue, never accept an open drink from a stranger and always watch the bartender pour your drink directly. If you follow the standard nightlife rules, Playa is incredibly fun and very safe.

Mazatlan (87/100)

The top five is rounded off Mazatlana destination that offers a completely different flavor than the Caribbean coast. With 344 votes from travelers, it has a very respectable safety score of 87 out of 100.

The atmosphere: This is an authentic Mexican coastal city that happens to have beautiful beaches. You get a beautiful historic downtown, incredible Pacific sunsets, and one of the longest oceanfront boardwalks in the world.

The reality: The biggest concern identified in Mazatlán was ‘Intimidation’, with 8 reports. To be clear, this does not mean there is physical danger or stalking. In the context of Mazatlán’s vast Malecón and Golden Zone, ‘harassment’ refers almost exclusively to the highly aggressive beach vendors, musicians and tour operators who constantly approach you as you try to relax on the sand. In fact, the coastal tourism corridors are isolated from the wider state problems. The US government even allows its own staff to freely visit the historic city center and walk the Malecón. The daily reality here in the tourist zone is very safe.

The move: The sellers are just trying to make money, but they can be tiring. If you want a completely peaceful beach day, stick to the private beach areas located near your resort. Otherwise, just keep walking and enjoy the incredibly rich culture and phenomenal seafood this city has to offer.
