Jeff Bezos Foresees Amazon’s Custom Chip Business as a Key Pillar of the Company

Although Jeff Bezos has stepped down as the CEO of Amazon, his involvement in the business remains significant. As the company’s Executive Chair and a major shareholder, his insights on Amazon are still highly regarded.

In a recent interview with Fortune, Bezos shared that Amazon’s custom chip business is poised to become a cornerstone of the company, alongside Marketplace, Prime, and Amazon Web Services.

Bezos emphasized the potential of the silicon business, stating, “What I see right now is that our chips business, our silicon business, is lining up to be our next pillar.”

Amazon has been investing in designing its own chips for artificial intelligence, a move that has been successful given the increasing demand for AI computing. The company’s acquisition of Annapurna Labs in 2015 has paved the way for the development of AI chips under the Trainium and Inferentia brands, offering a more affordable option for AI developers.

The disclosure of revenue for data center chips earlier this year revealed a combined annual run rate of over $20 billion, showcasing the growth and potential of Amazon’s chip business.

Bezos’ vision of pillars in the business stems from a 2014 letter to shareholders, where he outlined characteristics of a “dreamy” business, including durability over time. AWS, Marketplace, and Prime were considered the initial pillars, with the chip business now emerging as the fourth.

Despite Bezos’ past prediction of Amazon’s potential bankruptcy, he stressed the importance of focusing on customers to prolong the company’s lifespan. “If we start to focus on ourselves, instead of focusing on our customers, that will be the beginning of the end,” Bezos emphasized.

As Amazon continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the custom chip business is positioned to play a vital role in the company’s future success.
