Meditation Amidst the Coronavirus: A Journey with Weightloss

Meditation Amidst the Coronavirus: A Journey with Weightloss

13 Min Read

The pandemic has captured global attention, prompting discussions about its implications. How does meditation fit into this scenario? Can it provide safety, tranquility, and resilience during these chaotic times? Are there specific meditation practices tailored for coping with the pandemic? This article seeks to explore these questions.

The inherent unpredictability of life has been amplified! You might be feeling anxious about contracting the virus or concerned for the health and safety of your loved ones. Perhaps you’re troubled by the fate of your community or humanity at large, or overwhelmed by relentless news updates and the rising death toll.

While I take sensible precautions, I personally do not fear the virus (you’ll discover the reasons as you continue reading).

Stay Calm—Engage in Practice!

This crisis presents an invaluable opportunity to apply the skills cultivated through meditation—such as tranquility, balance, and acceptance—in our everyday lives.

We can utilize this time for personal growth, deeper meditation, and cherished moments with our loved ones. It’s also an excellent moment for introspection about what genuinely matters to us.

Consider these three guiding principles.

Mindful Preparedness

We should exercise caution without succumbing to panic.

Let’s prioritize hygiene, personal health, and minimize unnecessary social interactions and gatherings.

These steps are practical, but panicking or becoming neurotic serves no purpose; in fact, it can compromise our immune system (something to avoid at this critical time).

As practitioners of meditation, we aim to navigate a balanced approach: vigilant yet composed.

United Humanity

Meditation teaches us about compassion and interconnectedness, which is especially pertinent now as we collectively face this challenging situation.

Caring for oneself equates to caring for others, and vice versa. Remember, you are not alone in this journey!

Cognitive Resilience

Amid crises and threats, prioritizing mental well-being is crucial. This is where meditation shines; it aids in managing stress and anxiety, fostering calmness, and encouraging positivity.

Not only does this enhance your well-being, but it has also been shown to bolster your immune system, making you more resilient against viruses.

Actions We Can Take

(Note: I’m not a medical professional, and this article does not constitute medical advice. The content reflects my personal views and research.)

Here are five actionable steps we can implement:

  1. Limit exposure (avoid unnecessary travel, gatherings, events, and crowded places)
  2. Hygiene (frequent, thorough hand washing; minimize face touching and contact with public surfaces)
  3. Prepare for possible quarantine (stock up on essentials like food, water, and medicine)
  4. Enhance your immune system
  5. Address anxiety

This article will focus on the last two points, which are where meditation can play a pivotal role.

A weakened immune system increases your vulnerability. Thus, fortifying your immune system should be a top priority—it could very well be a matter of life or death!

While there remains much uncertainty surrounding the virus, some suggest that enhancing your immune system may not prevent infection. However, a robust immune system can be the differentiator between experiencing no illness and facing severe complications.

There are various ways to bolster your immune system. Many advocate for Vitamin D and other supplements, adequate sleep, and a nutritious diet.

Another effective method is taking daily cold showers, even for a few minutes. This practice has been a part of my daily routine for the last four years, and I genuinely feel its benefits on my immunity and overall well-being.

And let’s not forget about meditation! A mind burdened with stress or anxiety can significantly weaken your immune defenses.

The Role of Meditation: Immunity Enhancement

Prolonged exposure to stress and anxiety is known to weaken our immune systems (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). Likewise, negative emotions can have similar effects.

A study published in Psychosomatic Medicine (2002) revealed that individuals experiencing negative emotions were less resistant to the common cold compared to those with predominantly positive feelings.

This indicates that mastering stress, anxiety, and other negative emotions is vital for maintaining a strong immune system against viruses. Meditation serves as a powerful tool for achieving this.

If the stressors of modern life weren’t sufficient, the constant barrage of news and public fear surrounding the coronavirus adds to the anxiety. Thus, mastering your mind through meditation is more crucial than ever—finding what works best for you.

Numerous scientific studies validate that meditation enhances immune function, fortifies resilience to stress, and aids in anxiety management. A comprehensive list of benefits along with scientific references can be found here.

To reap these benefits, consistency in practice is key—daily meditation over time. This poses a challenge for many. Hence, forming a habit is the foundational Pillar of Meditation (discover more through this free video series).

Does the type of meditation matter? Yes and no.

There exists a variety of meditation styles, but they all share one common goal: to calm the mind and enhance stress and anxiety management.

That said, some styles place greater emphasis on deep breathing (like Pranayama) or relaxation (such as Yoga Nidra), making them even more potent for boosting immune health.

The Role of Meditation: Harnessing the Placebo Effect

Meditation practices incorporating affirmation and visualization can also enhance immune function by harnessing the placebo effect.

The placebo effect, or placebo response, occurs when a non-active treatment—like sugar pills, saline injections, or sham surgeries—leads to improvements in a patient’s condition due to their belief in the treatment’s efficacy. The stronger the belief, the more pronounced the potential benefits (source).

The crucial aspect here is not the treatment itself, but the extent of one’s belief in its effectiveness. Some assert that the placebo mechanism explains numerous “miracle cures” and alternative therapies.

[For a more profound understanding of the placebo effect, consider exploring these three recommended books: You Are the Placebo; Suggestible You; The Biology of Belief.]

Placebo Impact on the Immune System

The placebo effect illustrates that our beliefs, thoughts, and emotions can influence our physical state. Our mental state has a direct impact on our biological functions.

By believing in one’s healing while taking a “sugar pill,” individuals can experience actual healing. Numerous documented instances show the placebo effect performing comparably to “real” treatments for various conditions, including depression, chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, anxiety, asthma, hypertension, insomnia, and autoimmune disorders.

Thus, my assertion is straightforward: by believing in our immune strength, we can enhance our immune responses. It can become more robust and effective in combating viruses and diseases.

My Personal Experiment with the Placebo Effect

I am conducting an extensive experiment in my own life regarding this. Now, a word of caution: this is where things may get a bit unconventional! 😉

In my childhood, I struggled with severe pneumonia multiple times and dealt with chronic allergies. For much of my adult life, I would catch colds or the flu annually until I recognized the power of the mind over the body and decided to consciously leverage the placebo effect.

Years ago, I decided to “convince myself” that I will never again fall ill. This required time and consistent reinforcement—through affirmations and visualizations—but it has now become an effortless belief for me.

What have been the outcomes? For the past six years, I’ve not taken any medications—no flu vaccines, no aspirin, nothing. Aside from the occasional sneeze or runny nose, I’ve felt fantastic every single day and have not succumbed to illness.

Once, while aboard a small boat with about fifty others heading to the Great Barrier Reef, we encountered heavy rain and wind for over two hours, causing quite a tumultuous ride.

Every single person on that boat experienced seasickness, except for me. I was among the few who opted not to take seasickness medication.

I am well, I am well. My body is happy and healthy.” — I kept affirming to myself throughout that journey, repeating it with the clear intention of soothing my body.

Thus, I do not panic regarding the coronavirus situation.

While I adhere to all reasonable precautions, I possess the understanding that I can safeguard myself through the power of my thoughts.

I am confident that I will remain well, regardless of circumstances.

Meditation has empowered my mind, and it can do the same for you. We have only scratched the surface of what a serene and focused mind can accomplish!

Guided Meditations for Coronavirus

The coronavirus poses significant challenges; it is spreading rapidly, and no cure is available yet.

Nevertheless, there are proactive measures we can take to safeguard ourselves. In addition to limiting exposure and maintaining good hygiene, we must strengthen our immune systems and manage the negative emotions that arise during these times (fear, stress, anxiety).

Meditation can aid in these endeavors.
