Each season, Apiece Apart designers Starr Hout and Laura Cramer center their range of easy, wearable items around a broader spirit or mood. For fall, they felt inspired by the idea of being in the middle of nature, brought to life through cosy, earthy pieces that were easy to mix and match. “We were inspired by this connotation of nature and design – that design can go hand in hand with Mother Earth,” says Hout. “We think modern design comes from there.”
The natural focus for fall is fitting, as their collections focus on sustainable practices. For example, the main launch of the season is their big foray into eco-friendly denim; three new jeans styles made from regenerative cotton, ranging in fit from baggy to tapered with a twisted seam. “We work with the cleanest denim factory in the world, [Saitex,]says Kramer. “They recycle 98 percent of the water they use. All of our pieces came to life with denim in the mix; it became really cool and relaxed.”
Elsewhere in the line, the emphasis was on autumn clothing that can be worn both dressy and casual. Loose tailoring looked fresh and clean, especially the 1970s corduroy suits. Their classic top layer can be paired with just about anything. “It is very easy to wear all winter long, to combine in all kinds of ways,” says Hout. There were also sustainable approaches to outerwear; the oversized bomber jackets are made from organic cotton and recycled nylon, while their fluffy sheepskin coats are made from recycled polyester – and feel like a real deal.
Their fancier eveningwear is designed with convenience and functionality in mind – for the girl on the go. Their pretty floral dresses were made of soft Habitat silk. “We always think about what makes a print something you would like to wear,” says Hout. A black ‘Palisade’ skirt featured subtle, yet beautiful pleating down the front, while macrame lace dresses moved into sexier territory. “We played with the idea of purity and body positivity,” says Hout. “You can wear it with a bodysuit underneath — or nothing!”
