San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, a popular tourist destination, and Ensenada, Baja California, a city to the north, may soon new airportsThis was reported by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT).
As part of a plan to improve the national airport network, the SICT has asked the Ministry of Finance for more than 15 million pesos ($860,415) to conduct feasibility studies.
“These studies include investigations to determine the groundwater level and the ability of the soil layers to support the buildings, as well as carrying out proposals for foundation solutions,” Jorge Nuño, the SICT minister, made an announcement on December 6 during his appearance in the Chamber of Deputies.
“Both projects include a study that outlines the development of the airport infrastructure in short-, medium- and long-term phases,” Nuño added. The feasibility studies are expected to be completed in August.
Since the beginning of this year, both cities have been eligible for their own airports.
Although Ensenada has a military base for civil aviation, it is not suitable for larger aircraftand given its proximity to the US, the country could benefit from the nearshoring boom the area is currently experiencing.
San Miguel de Allende’s main airports, which are more than an hour’s drive away, are the only ones with air connections.
However, because San Miguel de Allende is close to two existing international airports and Ensenada is close to Tijuana International Airport, independent aviation analyst Juan Antonio José told news channel T21 that neither of the projects has the potential to be profitable.
New airport in Tulum
A few weeks ago, the long-awaited new airport in Riviera Maya officially opens for business. The first commercial flight to Tulum was operated by the Mexican budget airline Viva Aerobus.
Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO), located in Tulum, has been under construction since 2022. The airport is located close to the Caribbean coast on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. In the coming months At least five U.S. airlines are expected to fly from the airport.
