Authorities have warned foreign visitors regarding the recent spike in robberies, particularly in Bogotá, involving more than a dozen restaurants and commercial establishments.
Under the title “Security Alert: A Reminder of the Continued Risk of Crime in Colombia,” the US government outlines a series of security measures in case individuals become victims of criminal incidents.
“Recently, robberies committed by armed individuals have occurred at popular restaurants, cafes and breweries in Bogota, frequented by tourists and the expat community. reads the US embassy statement.
There is currently a warning level 3, meaning Americans should “reconsider traveling to Colombia.” An update issued on January 2, 2024, raised Arauca, Cauca and Norte de Santander to the ‘Do not travel’ level due to the ‘risk of kidnapping, crime and terrorism’.
In addition, the embassy encouraged Americans to take steps to increase their security such as avoiding using dating apps (more on this later) and actively seek cover and protection in the event of a shooting.
Regarding terrorism, the U.S. government says criminal groups can target “transportation hubs, markets, local government facilities, police stations, military facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, airports, and U.S. government facilities.”
Don’t use dating apps
A security alert about eight suspicious deaths of US citizens in Medellin, recorded between November 1 and December 31, 2023, was also issued by the US embassy last month.
These Americans are said to have been drugged, robbed and overdosed during their Tinder dates.
According to the Medellin District Personnel Tourism Observatory, criminals use dating apps, especially Tinder, as a means to identify potential victims.
Typically, victims engage in online chats with their would-be perpetrators, often attractive women from Medellin, Cartagena or Bogotá, for a few days or even weeks. After meeting up at a public restaurant or bar, victims can be drugged, robbed and sometimes murdered, either by leaving their drinks unattended or by inviting their dates back to their accommodation.
The local government will meet with dating app representatives to find ways to make dating apps safe again.
How to stay safe in Colombia
So is it still feasible to travel safely to Colombia? That is true, but you must follow the advice of the embassy. To get started you need to:
- Be careful when walking or driving after dark. Stay vigilant when entering or leaving buildings.
- Avoid showing off signs of wealth, such as expensive jewelry or watches.
- Minimize your cell phone use in public, especially on the street.
- Take only the necessary amount of cash and credit cards for your daily needs.
- When confronted with a robbery attempt, do not resist.
- Develop a personal security strategy.
- Be careful not to reveal excessive personal information to strangers.
With this latest security update, the entire country is on the brink of alert four, meaning Americans are strongly advised to refrain from visiting Colombia entirely.
