Seville, Spain is one of the best destinations in Europe for solo travelers.
I spent several weeks in Seville as a solo traveler, and have been hoping to return ever since!
It was one of my favorite cities in Europe as a solo traveler, as someone who has visited more than 30 countries in Europe.
Here’s why this city in southern Spain is ideal for a solo trip:
It’s very safe
As a solo female traveler, safety is important. Fortunately, Seville is an extremely safe destination.
Spain as a whole is very safe, but Seville feels particularly safe, especially when compared to other Spanish cities such as Barcelona, where pickpocketing and petty theft are a problem.
I felt safe walking around Seville alone at night because the city has such a night owl culture.
Eating at 11pm is completely normal in Seville, so the streets are always lively and never feel deserted even late at night.
Plenty of things to do for solo travelers
Seville is a fun city to explore on your own, whether you stroll through the picturesque Plaza de España or explore one of the city’s many historic sites.
I highly recommend visiting the Royal Alcázar of Seville, a historic palace with strong Moorish influences. This is one of the most beautiful places in the city.
For great views of the city, don’t miss climbing to the top of La Giralda, an iconic tower that is part of Seville Cathedral.
Easy to reach
One thing I liked about Seville as a solo traveler is how easy it is to get around.
Seville is much more compact than larger cities such as Madrid and Barcelona.
The historic center of the city is very walkable, as are the surrounding neighborhoods.
I hardly had to take public transport (everywhere I wanted to go was always within a 20-minute walk), but the city has a good tram system that makes getting around easy.
You can make friends there
I found the Spaniards in Seville very warm and friendly, so it’s easy to make friends there.
You can also participate in group activities to meet other people. For example, I took group Spanish lessons in Seville for a few weeks and got to know other international people that way.
Some other activities you can try include walking tours, food tours, and organized day trips as a way to meet other travelers.
Great for digital nomads
Seville is also a great destination for digital nomads.
If you have the option to work remotely, consider adding an extra week to your trip for a ‘workation’ where you can work from Seville.
If you work on the US East Coast, you can spend your mornings and early afternoons exploring Seville, starting work around 2pm and finishing around 11pm, just in time for dinner.
It is relatively affordable
Not Seville the cheapest place I’ve been in Europe, but it’s relatively affordable compared to other destinations in Western Europe such as France and Italy.
Even with Spain, Seville is cheaper than other cities.
According to data from BudgetYourReistraveling in Seville is about 10% cheaper than Madrid and 20% cheaper than Barcelona!
Good base for exploring southern Spain
Finally, Seville is an excellent base for exploring the Andalusia region of southern Spain.
Andalusia has recently set a new tourism record for its diverse natural beauty and wide range of destinations.
From Seville you can easily take day trips to other places in Andalusia, such as the historic city of Córdoba, the coastal city of Cadiz or the quaint town of Jerez de la Frontera, all less than 1.5 hours by train from Seville.
