The first Monday in May, the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art transformed into a fantastic catwalk for the 2024 Met Gala. This year’s theme, ‘The Garden of Time’, based on English writer JG Ballards The 1962 dystopian short story of the same name inspired a captivating mix of floral motifs, historical references and futuristic decorations. As always, celebrities pulled out all the stops to deliver an evening full of unforgettable fashion moments.
The “Sleeping Beauty: Fashion Reawakening” exhibition, the Costume Institute’s newest offering, has undoubtedly influenced many looks. Zendayaever the red carpet chameleon, arrived in a custom haute couture look by Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano. The emerald green and electric blue dress is a custom design made from organza and sage-colored lamé, crafted from a duchess satin corset, with hand-painted metal detailing, a drape and bow layered from aluminum and iridescent organza, and finished with a hand-embroidered corsage .

Her second outfit was a surprising archive look from John Galliano’s first haute couture collection for Givenchy in January 1996. This time she embodied a countess, dressed in an all-black look from John Galliano’s Maison Margiela Artisanal caught on a train. The dress, a modern interpretation of an awakened sleeping beauty, proved to be a masterclass in thematic execution.
For her first performance at the 2024 Met Gala, Tyla traded her usual style for something inspired by the evening’s theme. In collaboration with fashion house Balmain, she chose an imaginative outfit that perfectly matched the event’s theme, ‘Garden of Time’. Balmain’s designers created a unique dress for her, made from sand, cleverly paying tribute to the idea of the ‘sands of time’. The dress was designed to fit her body snugly and expanded into a flowing mermaid-style organza train at the bottom. The dress had three different sand colors and was studded with tiny crystal studs, making it sparkle when she moved. Tyla added a fun touch that tied in with the theme and wore a Balmain clutch in the shape of an hourglass.
Designer Harris Reed accompanied Demi Moore on the red carpet and shared details about her dress. He explained that the silk embroidery required 11,000 hours of work and that the dress was made with vintage wallpaper. Reed described the concept behind the dress as inspired by the Victorian era, depicting Moore as a beautiful flower in its highest bloom on the red carpet, surrounded by thorns. This design was intended to capture the image of a beautiful flower at the perfect moment of its bloom.
The evening wouldn’t be complete without a few breathtaking moments. Cardi B really knows how to impress with her fashion choices. At the 2024 Met Gala, she wore the largest dress ever seen at the event, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Her enormous black Giambattista Valli dress spread all around her on the carpet. She also wore a large beehive-style headpiece and beautiful emerald jewelry that matched the garden-themed backdrop of the event. This was her fifth time attending fashion’s biggest night, this year’s theme being ‘The Garden of Time’.
During the event, some men opted for striking outfits for the evening. Fashion model Wisdom Kaye wore a striking red floral outfit that appeared to be singed around the edges. Bad Bunny wore a unique outfit from Maison Margiela, complete with a dramatic hat. Jeff Goldblum dressed like a count from a story and added a little flair with dark green sunglasses that hinted at his upcoming role in “Bad.”
The 2024 Met Gala turned out to be an evening full of breathtaking fashion that transcends mere trends. It was a celebration of creativity, pushing the boundaries of what fashion can be. From historical references to futuristic visions, celebrities embraced the theme with gusto and provided an evening full of unforgettable red carpet moments.
