A few seasons ago we may have described LaPointe as the uniform of choice for the young girl from SoHo, but Sally LaPointe wants you to know that she designs with a broader customer base in mind. There are Beyoncé and Oprah, for example, who wear her clothes constantly on the red carpet, during talk shows and in their personal lives. In a turbulent economic time where the dangers of an independent brand are greater than ever, her brand is doing great; she recently hired two new managers, including a VP of Marketing, and is expanding her business into sunglasses and accessories.
But even though LaPointe’s influence reaches far and wide, this season she wanted to pay tribute to the neighborhood she calls home to the brand. “I’ve lived on this block of SoHo for five years, it feels like home,” she said during a recent appointment. “Every day I see a diverse group of people [dressed] in a very high/low mix, from crazy to conservative, which in my opinion really suits my brand.” Her resort collection included a mix of both day and night looks, including heavy satin cargo pants, cashmere sweaters, jersey catsuits and mesh bodysuits.
A particular point of inspiration this season was snakeskin and leopard prints; although, in keeping with LaPointe’s signature style, even the most understated pieces featured statement Mongolian collars that are sure to turn heads. In SoHo or anywhere in the world.
