The 14th edition of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) officially opened on November 2, 2025, with a spectacular ceremony that combined glamour, artistry and heartfelt tributes.
The opening night, held at Mikano in Victoria Island, Lagos, featured a star-studded red carpet and exclusive screening of the highly anticipated movie “3 cold dishes” in the Royal Box, Cube 65, located at the same location.
Celebration of music and film
This year’s edition of AFRIFF has a theme “Rhythms of the Continent: The Afrobeats Film Movement,” celebrating the vibrant connection between African music and cinema. The opening night was a dazzling showcase of Nollywood excellence, attended by industry veterans, global filmmakers, dignitaries and cultural icons.
The red carpet glittered with performances by several A-personalities, including Osas Ighodaro, Rita Dominicus, Waje, Kunle Remi, Segun Arinze, Michelle Dede, Omowunmi Dada, Mike Afolarin, Denrele Edun, Salami Rotimi, Ruth Kadiri, Nikos Leven, Tunde Onakoya, Asurf Oluseyi, Wale Ojoand more.
The evening’s presentation was hosted by the celebrated comedian and actor Boviwho kept the audience entertained with his trademark humor and charm.
A moving tribute to Herbert Wigwe
A deeply emotional highlight of the evening was the tribute to the late Herbert Wigwewhose lasting legacy of excellence, leadership and philanthropy continues to inspire.
A moving tribute video was played in his honour, followed by the presentation of the Herbert Wigwe Award for Excellence. The award was presented to the Governor of Delta State, His Excellency Sheriff Oborevworiand received on his behalf by the Deputy Governor, His Excellency Monday Onjeme.
The presentation took on an even more poignant touch when Mr. Wigwe personally took the stage to present the award.
Honoring leadership and creativity

Represents the Vice President of Nigeria, His Excellency Kashim Shettimawas the Honorable Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawawho also received the Herbert Wigwe Award for Excellence on his behalf.
In a moving gesture, the minister presented a framed art portrait of the founder and CEO of AFRIFF, Chioma Udein recognition of her visionary contribution to the growth of African cinema.
Internationally acclaimed actor and filmmaker David Oyelowoaccompanied by his wife Jessica Oyelowowas also honored with an Award for Excellence for his outstanding contributions to global storytelling and the representation of Africa on the world stage.
“3 Cold Dishes” opens the festival

The evening ended with the screening of “3 cold dishes,” the official opening film of the festival. Directed by Asurf Oluseyi and co-executive produced by Burna boy and Osas Ighodaro, the film tells the powerful story of three women from Nigeria, Benin and Ivory Coast who, after surviving human trafficking, reunite years later to demand justice. The screening drew thunderous applause and set the tone for a week of compelling storytelling and artistic genius.
A platform for African storytellers
Since its founding Chioma Ude in 2010, AFRIFF has become one of the most important platforms for African filmmakers, providing a space for discovery, collaboration and global exchange.
This year’s edition introduces the AFRIFF Film and Content Market (AFCM), an innovative marketplace designed to connect filmmakers, investors, distributors and digital content creators across the continent.
A week of creativity and connection

Over the course of the week, AFRIFF 2025 will feature film screenings, masterclasses, panel discussions and networking sessions – all aimed at strengthening African creativity and strengthening the continent’s presence in the global entertainment industry.
