If Cancun or Tulum are the only destinations that come to mind when you think “Mexican Caribbean,” let us set the scene a bit.
Cozumel is the largest island in the region, covering approximately 300 square kilometers of pure tropical bliss. It is located opposite Playa del Carmen on the mainland, and it is far from a hidden gemit still feels more relaxed and calm.
The compact, fully walkable capital, San Miguel de Cozumelis known for its enormous central square, dotted with tall palm trees and flanked by historic colonial buildings, cafes and souvenir shops. At night there are even live performers and street vendors serving local food and drinks.
A modest whitewashed church, Iglesia de San Miguel Arcangel is one of the oldest landmarks in the city, dating back to the end of the 19th century.
While the cathedral is not as monumental as your average Mexican cathedral, it does have a modest, charming display of stained glass windows, and it just so happens to be located close to where the first mass in Mexico is said to have been celebrated in the early 16th century… or so the marble information board on the wall claims.
However, the real draw of San Miguel is the city abundance of local markets and shops: Whether you’re here souvenir hunting, eating street food all day, or drinking tequilas at the nearest bar, you’re spoiled for choice.

Ancient ruins or paradisiacal beaches: which one will you go for?
As soon as you leave town, now, that is where the magic happens.
Tucked in the jungle-covered center of the island, San Gervasio is an ensemble of… well-preserved Mayan structuresrevolving around a cult for the native goddess Ixchel.
There are no pyramids or monumental structures like in Chichén Itzá or Tulum, but you can still see a number of small stone platforms, low temples and ceremonial plazas.
At the Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, Cozumel’s playground for nature loversIt’s all about lagoon views, crocodile sightings, and ancient swamp canals that cut through lush mangroves once used by the Mayans themselves.
One of the coolest things you can do is paddle board the narrow waterways, as the original inhabitants of Cozumel once did.
For the water babies for some underwater fun, Chankanaab is one must-visit controlled snorkeling park known for its sea lion shows, underwater shows and green botanical gardens. Very ‘all-in-one’ adventure stop.

With all that sightseeing and adventure, chances are at some point you’ll probably want to slow down, relax, and unwind on the nearest beach.
Playa Palancar is the classic, picture-perfect Cozumel beach.
Think calm, soft sand, great swimming and relaxed beach clubs serving fresh seafood and cold tropical cocktails. It is absolutely beautiful, but can be busy, especially during peak hours.
For something unusual, with insanely clear water and a laid-back island atmosphere, you might want to book a snorkeling tour to Playa El Cielo, an offshore sandbar, a short boat ride from Cozumel.
For those who don’t mind a dramatic, windswept coast and bring their surfboard, Playa San Martín, on Cozumel’s largely undeveloped east side, is a highlight. Even if you’re not into water sports, it’s worth coming here because the sea turtle hatches alone.
The best part? According to the Traveler Safety Index, this is the case no major incidents have been reported on Cozumel in recent monthseven at the height of this year’s gang uprising.
