It’s true everyone goes on year in and year out, and let’s be honest: if you’re looking for an authentic Caribbean experience, and not the usual polished, American-friendly tourism bubble, it’s not those overtouristed spots that inspire the most… intrigue.

The good news is that the Mexican Caribbean doesn’t have it only piece of paradise within easy reach of the US

It may have the best connectivity, but you can still fly non-stop from the United States 3 alternative tropical gems that have yet to be pampered by the masses – and guess what, they’re much safer too:

La Romana, Dominican Republic

La Romana, a beach resort on the Caribbean side of the Dominican Republic, is growing rapidly as an alternative to Punta Cana due to its relaxed atmosphere and safety record.

Although you get the five-star enclaves that encroach on pristine waters, there are some right next to them RealThe unstaged daily life: public markets, colorful graffiti and public beaches, such as Caleta, where music plays all day long and Dominican children play on the sand.

Bottom line: While crime exists, you’re unlikely to experience it in central La Romana. However, be aware of pickpockets and opportunistic robbers.

Located off the Caribbean coast of Honduras, just slightly larger than the state of Virginia, Roatán is one of the last truly unspoiled paradise islands of the tropics.

We’re talking about small, vibrant communities that don’t collapse under the weight of gentrification, vast natural parks and slower living: less traffic, less crowdsand wild beaches edged by crystal clear waters, stretching for miles without a single Meliá in sight.

Don’t get us wrong: the infrastructure is still there, after all, Roatán remains one of the most popular ports of call for Royal Caribbean cruises, but instead of larger-than-life resorts, imagine rustic, barefoot luxury boutique hotels right on the beach.

Is Roatan, Honduras Safe for Americans?

This is where the lines between the official safety advice and the actual risks on the ground start to look a bit blurred: if you follow the US advice to the letter, you would avoid Honduras as a whole, as it is classified as a Level 3 destination.

Travel is not explicitly discouraged at this level, but Americans should “reconsider” visiting due to higher-than-average crime rates.

While that is largely the case on the mainland, where gang activity and arbitrary law enforcement are rampant, Roatán is widely considered a safe destination by travel experts and travelers alike.

Even the typically conservative US government acknowledges that the Bay Islands (which include Roatán) have a greater “concentration of resources” and that tourist areas are “better controlled.”

In short, pickpocketing and rental car theft do exist, but let’s be honest: It is very unlikely that you will end up in Honduras’ murder statistics as a serious crime against tourists on the island is rare. The best approach is not to leave unattended assets and not to be the average obvious one gringo.

Guadeloupe, French Caribbean

Guadeloupe is a French Caribbean island with a mix of French and Creole culturescrisscrossed by jungle-covered volcanic peaks, and with no less than 300 miles of coastline, interspersed with quiet villages, hidden coves and sandy beaches.

Is Guadeloupe safe for Americans?

Guadeloupe is an integral part of the French Republic. We know it may be hard to imagine, but this means that the island duo is as much a part of France as a city like Paris or Lyon.

Citizens of Guadeloupe are, well, just French citizens, you pay for your colombos– a traditional one Guadeloupeen curry – in euros, and it is the French gendarmerie that you see checking the back streets of Pointe-à-Pitre.

Needless to say, Guadeloupe benefits significantly of an overseas region of a European country, especially given the questionable security levels in much of the Caribbean. In other words, France isn’t exactly keen on letting part of its national territory turn into a drug hub.

Violent crime against tourists is virtually unheard of, and even petty theft is not as prevalent as in other Caribbean centers.

It is no wonder that the American authorities Guadeloupe and the… whole of the French Caribbean, under level 1. This means it is even safer than mainland Francewhich remains at level 2 due to the persistent threat of terrorism.
