If you thought that tighter travel rules were a thing of the past, and something that you should not experience since the worldwide health crisis, think carefully again.
This year a number of countries have been rolled out New limitations that reach American passport holders.
Well-known examples include the United Kingdom, which introduced a mandatory pre-travel authorization that applies to all Americans in January.
Thailand, which recently imposed a ‘digital arrival card’ requirement on all foreign arrivals, and even the once relaxed Caribbean Nation or Saint Kitts and Nevis, where American citizens can no longer go without prior requesting permission.
Now another popular destination is reforming its visa system.
If you like safaris, surfing, multicultural cities, winery and epic walks, you need to know that one country that checks all those boxes will soon require ETAs for access:

The South African ETA is presented
As confirmed by the South African Minister of the Interior, Leon Schreiber, the African nation will soon roll out its own Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system.
Mr. Schreiber stated that the ‘first phase’ of the ETA will take place between September and October 2025, and in the beginning it applies to G20 members. This includes countries such as the United States, China, Brazil, Canada and Mexico.
In the event that you have not received the memo, Johannesburg organizes a G20 summit on 22-23 November, and attendees are one of the first to be made to apply for the South African ETA.
Applications are opened on a non-specific date in mid-Octoberfor the meeting.

After that date, and well in 2026, it will be extended to the general public of these countries. Based on our understanding, ETA will replace the visa-executive process of South Africa in visa-requiring markets, such as China, India and Indonesia.
That is great news for citizens of those countries, who have had to commute to South African embassies so far, and interviews and a strict screening procedure to attend a tourist visa.
On the other, Americans never had to fill in formsOr undergo pre-reis procedures to be eligible to travel to South Africa.
It will not be mandatory … at least in the beginning
Regarding adding ‘Reishoepels’, Schreiber has developed that travelers currently who are currently exempt from South African Visa (ie Americans, Canadians, Europeans) option To request an ETA, although it will not be mandatory in the beginning.

On the other hand, on arrival, the boundary process will be considerably facilitated because they will be screened in advance with all other travelers in advance and will probably spend less time answering questions to the border.
In short, provisionalAmericans will retain their current access conditionsBut understanding how quickly Etas evolves, and the fact that it is the purpose of the South African government to further digitize its border, we suspect that it will be a necessary step in the future.
After all, the minister has revealed that the government currently determines how ‘efficient biometric data can be recorded’ of visa-exempt travelers, such as Americans, and called on the tourism sector to encourage the acceptance of the ETA system, because this is the ‘easiest and fastest’ solution.
In short, as an American citizen, you don’t count yourself yet …
Current requirements for entering South Africa

For those who are already applying for a South African ETA this year, although it will not be mandatory in the beginning if you are an American:
The South African ETA will be Valid for a maximum of 90 daysWhich means that you can enter South African as often as you wish within the 3-month period after issue, and once in the country, if they are travelers in the long term, applicants can apply for a one-off 90-day extension.
This brings the total maximum period of authorized stay up to 180 days.
So far, more specific infromaitone such as application procedures, prices and the official webpage have not been released, but we do know that all other requirements that were before ETA are and apply to American passport holders, remain valid.
In other words:
- Make sure your passport has At least 30 days of validity past Your intended departure
- It must also have at least two full blank pages (without visa stamps)
- If you travel from a country or you endure through a country with a risk of transfer of yellow fever on your road to South Africa, you must show proof of vaccination of yellow fever

Are Etas the new standard?
As you may have noticed if you have followed Journey Even, eTas or Estas, or ETIAS, no matter how different countries they call, will be the new standard for international journeys.
Although they are not officially described as such, ETAs are the same as digital visas. Unless you apply for it, you cannot enter an ETA requirement country. This has been the case for years for Americans who travel to places like Australia and New Zealand, but Now it quickly spreads worldwide.
ETAs are usually obtained via an online form, where you expect you to submit personal and travel -related details, upload your passport information, answer a series of security questions (routine procedure in visa applications) and finally, more often than not, pay compensation.

The reimbursement can vary enormously between countries, ranging from less than $ 10 to more than $ 70 in the New Zealand case (which costs $ 10 on their official app, but includes a mandatory international visitor retention and tourism levy of around $ 60).
At the moment we do not know the exact South African ETA allowance.
Before 2025, hold a valid passport with sufficient empty pages Because Visa post stamps was almost everything you had to present at a foreign border as an American citizen. Now it is becoming increasingly likely that you have to request an ETA that goes to most regular destinations.
The UK was the first in Europe to introduce an, but as soon as 2026 will need Americans mandatory digital access permits that travel to more than 30 European countries. In Asia, Japan also indicated that they will launch their ETA soon, and many more destinations will follow their example.
