Canada issues travel warnings for eight popular winter holidays in October 2025

Canadians planning a warm weather getaway this fall or winter should keep in mind: the Government of Canada has updated its travel advisories for eight popular destinations, including Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. While travel remains possible, officials are urging increased caution due to crime, severe weather and local instability.

Jamaica

Risk level: Avoid non-essential travel.
Authorities warn about it Tropical Storm Melissawhich is expected to bring heavy rain, flooding and landslides. Travelers should also be careful with it violent crime and gang activityespecially in Kingston and Montego Bay.

Mexico

Risk level: Be extremely careful.
As long as the resorts remain open, organized crime, kidnapping and armed robbery are a problem even in popular tourist areas like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. Avoid traveling to high-risk states such as Guerrero, Michoacan and Sinaloa.

Cuba

Risk level: Be extremely careful.
Cuba continues to face challenges severe shortages of food, fuel and medicineleading to disruptions in transport and tourism services. Petty theft and scams targeting visitors are also common.

Dominican Republic

Risk level: Be extremely careful.
Tourists must remain alert petty theft, armed robberies and assaultsespecially in the big cities and holiday resorts. The border with Haiti remains volatile and should be avoided.

Bahamas

Risk level: Be extremely careful.
Despite the postcard-perfect beaches, the Bahamas report high crime ratesespecially in that Nassau and Vrijhaven. Tourists are targets of thefts and attacks near resorts and beaches.

Trinidad and Tobago

Risk level: Be extremely careful.
The islands are located under a state of emergency in the midst of rising gang violence, armed robberies and kidnappings. Travelers should avoid isolated areas and remain vigilant, especially at night.

Costa Rica

Risk level: Be extremely careful.
Costa Rica is known for its ecotourism and is facing problems pickpocketing, car burglaries and armed robberiesespecially in San José and coastal areas. Passport theft is a common problem.

Turks and Caicos Islands

Risk level: Be extremely careful.
Crime has increased, especially on Providencialeswith reports of armed robberies and assaults. Visitors are advised to use reputable taxis and avoid walking alone at night.
