Mexico is officially America’s #1 overseas vacation destination.

More Americans visit Mexico than anywhere else in the world.

Cancun is the country’s vacation hotspot and there’s no better time to visit Mexico than during the winter months.

But Mexico doesn’t start and end in Cancun!

Now Delta Airlines is launching two new non-stop flights this winter, meaning exploring slightly further afield will be easier than ever for many travelers.

Tulum and Mazatlan will both get a new Delta flight route. Here’s what you need to know:

Detroit to Tulum

If you live in Detroit, you have more options to fly to Mexico this winter.

Starting January 11, 2025, Delta will launch its first flight from Detroit to Tulum.

This is a once-a-week flight operated on Saturdays.

To check out the prices, I looked at a one-week visit from January 18 to January 25 with Google flights.

Return flights currently cost $519 for an economy class flight in the main cabin – which is the cheapest way to fly!

Delta offers 3 different flight classes on this route. These are First Class, Delta Comfort Plus and Main Cabin.

Upgrading your flight and traveling in Delta Comfort Plus Class costs $861. Going all out for a First Class ticket costs $1,394.

Delta’s first class passengers enjoy a chef-curated meal experience and complimentary premium beer, wine and spirits.

But perhaps the biggest draw for most passengers is the larger seats, extra legroom and more room to relax.

And if you’re not a fan of long flights, you’ll be happy to know that the flight time is only 4 hours.

Tulum is a beautiful holiday destination on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. It is known for its ancient Mayan ruins, stunningly beautiful beaches and beach clubs, and overall laid-back atmosphere.

I visited both Tulum and Cancun in the spring (my first trip to Mexico) and found Tulum to be a more beautiful, cultural, and relaxing experience, so this new itinerary definitely gets a compliment from me!

Los Angeles to Mazatlan

Slightly earlier than the new Detroit flight (and just in time for the holidays!), Delta will launch a new flight from Los Angeles to Mazatlán on December 21.

This will also be a weekly flight, and also on Saturdays. Perfect for 7 days in the sun!

Mazatlan BeachMazatlan Beach

I used Google Flights to check prices for a week in Mazatlán with this new route, but I didn’t look at the flights immediately after the route launched, as I did for Detroit-Tulum, because traveling during the holiday season is always dramatically increases flight prices.

Instead, I searched for a week in January: January 18 to January 25, so that the comparison between the 2 flights and their prices is identical.

The 3 flight classes on the route are the same as those I outlined above: First Class, Delta Comfort Plus and Main Cabin.

A return ticket in economy class costs $357. In First Class, the price jumps to $1,037.

This is also an attractively short flight time, with the journey taking just 2 hours and 33 minutes.

Mazatlan is a lesser known place than Cancun or Tulum, but it is a beautiful city and definitely worth a visit.

It is a colonial city with a rich heritage and beautiful architecture.

But it also boasts golden sandy beaches that are perfect for those who want to enjoy a fly-and-flop holiday.

Editor’s note: I went to Mazatlan this year and loved it! My favorite destination is Mexico, and I felt safer there than anywhere else. Plus looks at the views 🤩. We literally walked on this beach for hours, and it was all just so beautiful.

Delta or AeroMexico?

It’s worth noting that if you book one of these flights for your next vacation, your tickets will say Delta, but you may be on an AeroMexico flight.

The return journey of both of my sample flights was operated by Delta via AeroMexico.

Aeromexico aircraftAeromexico aircraft

This is because Delta and Aeromexico have a joint operating agreement, meaning Delta can “provide more connectivity and scheduling options that benefit customers of both airlines.”

In reality, aside from the brevity, this means that you will be on a different plane for both parts of your trip, but the quality of service you receive should be exactly the same!
