If you dream of one peaceful, last-minute escape to Punta Cana this winter, we at Travel off the path I have some news: the secret is officially out.

After Hurricane Melissa devastated parts of Jamaica in late October Dominican Republic just has gave the green light for no fewer than 800 additional flights to pick up travelers who cancel Jamaica and reroute their winter sun trips.

Here’s what that actually means for your vacation — and how you can avoid being driven out of the Caribbean altogether.

What’s Behind the “Jamaica Exodus”?

Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica on October 28, causing extreme flooding, extensive damage to infrastructure and billions of dollars in losses.

The recovery is slower than many had hoped:

  • Several hotels and resorts on Jamaica’s north and west coasts are not expected to fully reopen until mid-to-late 2026.
  • Jamaica officially has one outbreak of leptospirosisa bacterial disease linked to contaminated flood water, with confirmed cases and multiple deaths since the storm.
  • Health officials are warning travelers to be careful of standing water and follow strict hygiene and food safety measures if they do go.

Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic – already one of the most popular destinations in the world and set to set tourism records by 2025 – saw an opportunity.

Hector Porcellachairman of the country’s Civil Aviation Board, said they gave permission 800 flights “in one fell swoop” because the tourism that went to Jamaica is now being diverted to the DR.

800 extra flights = a very different winter in the DR

That one 800 flightsa mix of scheduled and charter services, will be spread over about eight months, but it is the bottleneck winter high season (Christmas through New Year and early January).

This is what it looks like on the ground:

  • Occupancy rate almost 95%: Hotel associations in the DR are already predicting an occupancy rate of more than 95% during the main holiday weeks.
  • See you soon, last minute offers: When we broke down why this trendy Caribbean island will continue to break tourism records in 2025, we took note prices were already rising. With tens of thousands of additional passengers, don’t expect “flash sales” to magically appear.
  • Busier airports: Punta Cana International (PUJ) will be wrapped, but some of this extra lift will also be directed indoors Santo Domingo (SDQ) And Puerto Plata (POP)which can be smart if you are flexible.

If you read our guide to the most affordable Caribbean spots for a warm winter vacation, you’ll remember we’re highlighted Puerto Plata as a cheaper, quieter alternative to Punta Cana – that tip just got even more valuable.

How to tackle the Dominican Republic smartly this winter

If you’re already booked for the DR, don’t panic, just get organised:

  • Record transfers now: With a 95% occupancy rate, private transfers, rental cars and popular excursions can sell out long before you land.
  • Confirm your flights: Additional flights mean schedule changes. Keep an eye on your booking and app notifications so that you are not surprised by a time shift.
  • Shift your dates if you can: Traveling in mid-January or early February instead of New Year’s week can save a lot of money and sanity, a strategy we’ve previously recommended for winter vacations in the Caribbean.
  • Think beyond Punta Cana: Consider flying in Santo Domingo for a culture-plus-beach combination or Puerto Plata for a more relaxed resort scene and a better price.

Should you still go to Jamaica instead?

Here’s the honest opinion.

Jamaica is open. Cruise arrivals have resumed and the tourism board is working hard to get key areas back on their feet.

If you:

  • Hate hustle
  • Don’t mind staying mainly on site
  • Are comfortable with a bit of ‘rough edges’ infrastructure

…you could have a quieter, crowd-free resort experience in Jamaica this winter.

But there are real caveats:

  • Some hotels remain closed or partially operational.
  • There is one active outbreak of leptospirosiswith health officials advising strict precautions around flooding and potentially contaminated environments.
  • You must follow official guidelines from bodies such as the CDC and the Jamaican Ministry of Health, and talk to a healthcare provider if you have any concerns, especially if you plan to leave the resort bubble.

If you are risk-averse or traveling with young children, the DR will now feel easier.

If the prices in Punta Cana are eye-watering or your dates are already sold out, don’t assume your winter sun plans are dead.

Some solid plan B options we’re working on Travel off the path Love:

  • Belize (Placencia): In our recent roundup of two little-known paradise destinations named best Caribbean getaways for 2026, Placencia emerged as a super chilled beach town with much less crowds than the large resort centers.
  • Saba: Same item, completely different vibe – think small, volcanic and wildly scenic. Great for divers and adventurers who want bragging rights.
  • Mexican Costa Maya (Bacalar and Mahahual): We have already shown how the Costa Maya still feels “untouched” compared to the busier parts of the Riviera Maya, with relaxed Mahahual and dreamy Bacalar Lagoon giving you that Caribbean blue water without the chaos of a mega resort.

The bottom line

The Dominican Republic just turned into the main safety valve for a disrupted Caribbean winter.

If you want to come:

  1. Book nownot ‘when I see a deal’.
  2. Be flexible about dates and airports.
  3. Have one backup destination (Belize, Costa Maya, Saba) ready to go if prices rise.

Whether you cut through the crowds in Punta Cana, stick to quieter Jamaica, or zigzag where everyone else is looking, this winter is shaping up to be one of the most unusual – and strategic – Caribbean seasons we’ve seen in years.
