How is it possible that almost 12 million people every year visit a place you’ve probably never heard of?
In the same way we all have our beloved secret getaways close to home, the same goes for Asia.
Travelers have been enjoying idyllic escapes to South Korea’s lesser-known paradise for years.
Seoul is always vibrant and exciting to visit, but… Jeju Island invites travelers to experience the charm of Korea in a more peaceful atmosphere, highlighted by epic cuisine and otherworldly nature.

Despite being largely unknown to Western travelers, Jeju is not a remote island ill-equipped for a spike in tourism; swanky brand hotels and centuries of amazing culture await you.
Jeju Island: closer than you think

Jeju may be an exception, but the good news is that you can easily reach this 2 million year old island with a single connection.
With so many non-stop flights to Seoul, Taipei and countless Chinese cities, Jeju is a lot closer and easier to get to than you might think.
This volcanic wonder is located south of mainland South Korea, in the Strait of Korea alone, unlike other Asian countries with paradise spots on the map.

Jeju’s otherworldly nature and postcard villages
When we hear the word ‘island’ we automatically think of pristine beaches. In the case of Jeju, there is much more to discover.
To take Jeongbang Waterfallsfor example, the only waterfall that plunges into the sea; an absolute must during your trip!
Then there is Seongsan Ilchulbonga UNESCO-listed site that’s an excellent stop for sunsets and to take in the island’s volcanic past, visiting a huge crater that can only be described as other-planetary.


Of course, this island has its fair share of incredible beaches to visit, such as Hamdeok, Hyeopjae and Yongmeori, which makes it complete. TripAdvisor’s best suggestionsbut exploring other natural attractions is what will really captivate you.
The island is teeming with scenic waterfalls, but perhaps the most amazing otherworldly experience is visiting Manjanggul lava tubeone of the longest naturally formed lava tubes on Earth.
When you visit Korea, you may not think about such an amazing nature. You’re probably thinking of the food, culture, and bright lights of Seoul.


But don’t sleep on Jeju’s picture-postcard villages, which since the new implementation have become a great alternative to Seoul’s popular Hanok Village. curfews and fines to combat concerns about overtourism next spring.
Jeju Folk Village is a restored village from the 19th century, with more than 100 structures and historic buildings remains.
Seongeup Folk Village is another priceless photo op where locals have continuously called this place home for over 600 years – and don’t miss the nearby Green Tea Cave!
Kimchi, BBQ and incredible seafood: add some spice to your life in Jeju!


You’ve probably realized that Chinese takeaway and cheap sushi from the supermarket aren’t the only Asian treats at home.
The US has seen an explosion of Korean restaurants, largely highlighted by Korean BBQ, topped with Korea’s spice of life, kimchi, a spicy main dish made from fermented vegetables and chili (and very healthy!).
In Jeju, you can get the real deal at several markets, street vendors and top restaurants, many of which can be found in Jeju City, the island’s largest population group.
Although winter is a great time to visit local citrus farms and also taste Jeju tangerines. Here are some savory dishes to look out for when it’s time to indulge:
- Black pork barbecue
- Gogi Guksu (pork broth-based noodle soup; ideal for cold nights!)
- Haemultang (seafood-based soup; also great for cold weather!)
