While everyone is turning back the clock ten years on social media for some strange reason, we at Travel Off Path are still focused on where we need to go in the here and now.
Besides, no one wants to see my man bun…
With a little help from fellow experts at Travel + Leisurewe have delved into the perfect lake escape to treat yourself.

But hey, if you have to look in the rearview mirror ten years ago to remind yourself that you deserve it, then you do, boo.
Most travelers visit Atlanta, Savannah or the charming island chain just steps from the Florida state line, but what gets overlooked is a lake town with a chic resort, a luxury golf community and spacious vacation rentals if you prefer more space than a traditional hotel room.
The lake is not only beautiful, surrounded by lush greenery and water sensations after winter, but… the city that calls this glistening body of water home is also a joy to explore.
Welcome to Greensboro: Georgia’s secret hideout

Want to escape the noise? Greensboro, Georgia is just the place!
With a beautiful city center packed with historic storefronts and local shops, you don’t have to worry about the hustle and bustle of Savannah and can just sit back and unwind without cheap tour buses or arrogant Karens (yes, Savannah can be like that too).
There is probably no city in Georgia that is so easy to get along with. We’re talking about locals waving from their porches with a pitcher of sweet tea at the ready in this quiet town.
Dating back to 1786, its history is almost tangible as it has experienced quite a tumultuous timeline, involving the Civil War, the Great Depression, and other hardships.

Nowadays it’s just one enjoyable escape from the city grindespecially since it is only about 80 miles southeast of Atlanta.
And if your savings account looks anything like mine, then splurging on a five-star lake resort may not be in the cards.
Don’t let that stop you from visiting: Greensboro has a handful of brand name chains that won’t break the bank, and the Goodwin Manor (when it opens again).
Lake Oconee is your next waterfront getaway

It is a general consensus that the downtown is the heart of any place.
Not that the center should be skipped, but we are working on this together with Travel + Leisure in the belief that Lake Oconee is the heart of Greensboro.
A true four-season getaway, although swimming is not possible at the moment, Lake Oconee is great to visit no matter what the weather forecast says.
Right now it’s a great place to make friends with a boat owner and go fishing or just enjoy a walk along the lake, but in the spring it takes on a whole new identity with wildflowers and sunny days ahead.

You’ll see more and more kayaks and paddle boarders, as well as swimmers, as the water warms until late September, when the lake becomes more of a photo opportunity for leaf peepers in the coming months.
There are several outlets where you can rent whatever equipment you want, but if there is one activity you shouldn’t miss, it is a sunset cruise.
Ritz Carlton: Lake Oconee’s premiere centerpiece
If you thought Ritz Carlton stuck to household names to build their fancy properties, think again!

It’s true, Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee is one of their most tranquil luxury resorts considering its location.
Here are 5 things we like about this Ritz and that we think you’ll like too:
- Exclusive lake beach where you can kayak, paddle board and rent boats without leaving the property
- Multiple swimming pools, including one swimming pool for adults only (seasonal) and a large family pool complex
- A world-class spa with private treatment rooms, a mixed relaxation area, sauna and steam rooms
- A striking array of onsite restaurants, from the resort’s signature steakhouse to relaxing lakeside patios
- Access to Reynolds Lake Oconee Golf Courses, with transit and tee times coordinated through the concierge

The only thing you can scoff at is the price. Yes, there is often a comma in the nightly rates.
That said, don’t forget what we said about vacation rentals. Check out Airbnb for much more wallet-friendly prices.
