There’s no doubt that Hawaii is one of America’s dreamiest destinations. Otherwise, those in need of a sunny vacation would not endure the long flight across the Pacific Ocean.
But when it comes to Honolulu, some might argue that it doesn’t live up to the hype you see in the movies.

With a surprising amount of headache-inducing traffic right off the bat and a perceived lack of culture disguised by an urban sprawl of eyesores from big-name brands, some travelers may wish they had skipped Hawaii’s capital for a more authentic sense of Hello.

Small town delicacies on the big island

Sitting on the windward side of Hawaii’s Big Island, charming Hilo almost feels out of place in the best way.
This local town isn’t exactly a bustling tourist hotspot – not that it shouldn’t be – vacationers just aren’t that familiar with this side of Hawaii’s appeal.
Because Waikiki is virtually a household name at this point, when venturing so far from the mainland, travelers take fewer risks and opt for the safest bet for a successful vacation.
Hilo is the exact opposite of Honolulu, and that’s no surprise: this laid-back city offers an array of unforgettable sights and attractions.

Of untamed beauty within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and beautiful waterfalls to chase up close, Hilo is a far cry from the ugly resort crowds.
With no crowds in sight, and nothing but lush greenery and open coastlines, we at Travel Off Path believe this is the Hawaii you’ve always dreamed of.
Plus, the city center is truly beautiful and offers an unexpected small-town charm not often seen in postcard-perfect advertisements.

Is Hilo a beach destination?

Hilo isn’t necessarily a classic beach destination – and this is a big reason why many choose the chaos of Waikiki over the tranquility of the Big Island.
With the rugged, lava-formed coastline you can witness breathtaking beauty, but not ideal beach conditions for lounging along the sun-drenched shores.
Hilo is more of a nature destination, minus swimming and surfing. But being outdoors is a huge draw and there are a number of apostrophe-laden accessible beaches that are worth the trip if you’re up for an adventure.
I mean, you’ve come this far…

The black sand beach of Punalu’u is about 90 minutes from the city and offers – you guessed it – dark-hued volcanic sand, plus common turtle sightings and virtually no crowds for free snorkeling.
But Richardson Ocean Park is the closest swimming spot near the city. It’s a short drive from the airport and just steps away On the beach with friends Bed and Breakfastone of the most charming locally owned properties in Hawaii.
Southwest is about to launch a groundbreaking new flight From Vegas
Now the moment you’ve been waiting for!
