The good news is that this doesn’t have to be complicated. A barrier repair routine has a clear logic, and once you understand the sequence, it becomes second nature. Start with a gentle cleanser with a low pH level. Harsh foaming cleansers with sulfates raise your skin’s pH and disrupt the enzymes that process barrier lipids. Your cleaner should feel comfortable and not squeak.
While your skin is still slightly damp, apply your moisturizing serum. Then apply your ceramide-rich moisturizer with that lipid blend. In winter or in air-conditioned environments, apply a light occlusive coat in the evening.
The morning routine gets SPF on top every day. Australian UV doesn’t take away winter, and UV exposure is one of the main things that depletes ceramides over time. Daily SPF is a non-negotiable for skin barrier health, not just for sun protection.
Expect 4 to 6 weeks before you notice any real change. That tight feeling after cleansing often decreases first, around week 2 to 3. Visible texture improvement and better product tolerance usually follow in weeks 4 to 6. Barrier recovery follows your skin’s natural renewal cycle. It takes time, and that’s completely normal.
