Famous for its turquoise waters, white sandy beaches surrounded by tall palm trees and luxurious resorts, the Caribbean is a no-brainer for Americans who want a sunny winter getaway, but in places like Punta Cana or Jamaica, it does not come without drawbacks.

Whether it’s the excessive crowds on the beaches or the reduced level of safety, there are plenty of other factors to consider when choosing your next tropical vacation, especially if a stress-free vacation is a priority.

Perhaps surprising to some, that is why this lesser-known island paradise is preserved currently rising in popularity as a welcome alternative to the usual tourist hotspots:

Tourism in Saint Kitts and Nevis is increasing rapidly!

Saint Kitts and Nevis, a two-island nation, is currently one of the fastest growing destinations in the Caribbean, as reported by a local news outlet Caribbean magazine: exactly 118,574 visitors were registered during the third quarter, an increase of 21.6% about 2023.

As Tourism Minister Marsha Henderson confirmed in the release, the country is on an ‘upward trajectory’, with 2024 poised to be one of tourism’s best years yet, and looking for the year ahead ‘even larger numbers’ are expected.

It naturally begs the question: what is the appeal of Saint Kitts, with stiff competition from resorts in the Dominican Republic, trendy Jamaica and of course mighty Cancun in Mexico, and how is it attracting a growing number of foreigners?

Green nature, untouched by people

The main reason tourists flock to the island duo is their vibrant character, whether it’s the rainforest-clad mountains of Saint Kitts and its marine parks or the undisturbed, untouched nature of Nevis. white powdered sugar sand and pristine greenery, it is a literal Eden.

In Saint Kitts, top locations include Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano that can be hiked for a breathtaking panorama of the island, Cockleshell Bay, an undeveloped beach surrounded by the clearest water you will ever see, and South Friar’s Bay, perfect for snorkeling .

In Nevis, Nevis Peak is the highest peak, with tourist-friendly trails running through the jungle; the Botanical Gardens are equally beautiful, with their vast collection of exotic flowers, and for the water babies, the historic Bath Hotel has hot springs said to be therapeutic in nature.

Rich colonial heritage

Not all Caribbean islands are known for their nature-centric architectural sights, but part of the reason why Saint Kitts and Nevis is so fascinating is its history, with periods of British and French colonization.

A monument on the UNESCO list, Brimstone Hill Fortress was built by African slavesand it is one of the best preserved fortifications in America, while charming Basseterre has a central square modeled on London’s Piccadilly Circus and a Victorian clock tower, despite its French name.

If you’re looking for a unique way to explore the rich heritage of Saint Kitts and Nevis, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway takes you through sugar cane fields and plantations. Our fellow foodies: don’t miss this Munch Food tour in Basseterre (the roasted chicken and fried plantains taste great!)

Saint Kitts and Nevis are Terribly Safe

The best thing is that this country receives hundreds of thousands fewer tourists every year, much less in combination with other sunny competitors that receive millions of tourists, it feels much quieter in comparison with quieter hotels and beaches.

Furthermore, this is a very safe destination by Caribbean standards, listed as one by the US Department of State Level 1 destination: In non-technical terms, this means that Americans should not take any additional precautions beyond those they would normally take abroad.

These include booking guided activities through reputable providers to avoid scams, staying in designated areas for tourists and not leaving valuables and personal items unattended in public areas such as beaches.
