Dublin is typically your gateway to Ireland.

Despite the classic pubs, cobbled streets and friendly locals, when you go beyond the city, it’s where the country really shines.

In addition to Dublin, travelers can fly directly to several airports in Ireland, such as Shannon and Cork.

By doing this, the country lovely villages are often overlooked whilst fascinated by Ireland’s amazing coastlines and storybook castles.

One such town has been voted one of Ireland’s most beautiful escapes, where the atmosphere is like a ‘movie set‘.

With virtually no crowds and beautiful medieval sights, it’s time to say goodbye to city life and hello to the picturesque town Inistioge.

Travel anxiety can make us think too much about where to go; I’m certainly guilty of it.

Heck, I’ve lived in San Diego for ten years and am only now visiting local hotspots that I’ve pushed aside for far too long.

The thing is, Ireland is one of those destinations where plans can fall through.

There are just too many amazing places to discover in one trip.

That said, if you have a truly authentic Irish town where hospitable locals are ready to show off their beloved hideaway, then Inistioge is the answer to your unfinished travel plans.

Despite being off the radar of travelers, Inistioge has the ‘Heritage Route’ for anyone who is ready to give their beautiful community a fair chance.

This picturesque village dates back far into prehistoric times, where, as legend has it, the ancient Osraige tribe defeated Olaf Cuaran, King of Dublin, in 964.

Today, Inistioge is designated a national monument and protected under the National Monuments Act, lending further credence to the intriguing 23-stop Heritage Trail, featuring ancient castles, Grade II listed houses and old world churches.

Dublin is a great city, but finding some of your inner peace among the always busy streets is a hard sell.

Sure, you can find a quiet corner of a pub until the ‘auld fellas’ burst into an improvised set of harmonious Irish folk songs.

Well, Inistioge is in many ways the anti-Dublin. An important reason is the beautiful landscape and tranquility.

The Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum is a must-visit while you’re here.

Access is only $5.50 to access beautiful gardens, scenic trails, centuries-old trees, and yes, even gushing waterfalls along a certain path.

Here you will also find one of the city’s most historic landmarks: the Woodstock House, which dates back to the 18th century and remains relevant for its age.

You can spend all day exploring the extensive grounds and taking advantage of the best views of the entire village and the parallel River Nore.

Best of all, you can refuel or end your day in the charming on-site tea rooms. But don’t wait too long: the tea rooms close from October to April!

A recent visitor, who received high praise across the board, revealed: “Woodstock Gardens is a perfect place to visit with family and friends, and even better, it’s dog friendly. A really lovely walk through the gardens and into the woods, you can really spend as little time as you want.”

Come here And where to stay

Inistioge is located in Kilkenny County, away from other major cities.

Many of Ireland’s most popular destinations are spread out, which works in Inistioge’s favor, as you can convenient flying to Dublin or Cork.

From Dublin you can board a train or bus to Kilkenny and then transfer to the bus or take a taxi to Inistioge.

Expect train tickets to start around $10 if you go directly through the Irish railway.

You could also rent a car, but know that Ireland does require International driving licenses for non-European residents.

From Cork it’s a longer train ride, but only about $6 more than Dublin.

The same goes for departures from Shannon, with an additional stop, meaning Dublin is generally the most feasible.

When you arrive, don’t expect the well-known brand names and eye-catching chain restaurants. Inistioge has a feel for it Real Ireland with traditional pubs and homely Bed & Breakfasts.
