The Pacific Northwest (PNW) may not seem like the last frontier of American tourism, while places like Alaska have so many areas yet to be explored, but it doesn’t have to be just Bigfoot hunters roaming the pristine, evergreen back roads here.
A local insider 2026 travel guide we found 4 great hideaways away from the hustle and bustle of Seattle and whatever Portland claims to be these days…

With so many unknown gems overlooked by one of America’s “weirdest” cities, Seattle’s mainstream popularity, and California’s world-famous coastline, our seasoned experts here at Travel Off Path realize that Oregon is too often overlooked for its small-town charm and beautiful beach getaways.
That’s why we’ve picked the best of the best the PNW has to offer, besides the few household names – so get ready to add lesser-known Oregon to your 2026 travel plans!
Cottage Grove: the ‘bridge’ to the wonderful wilderness of Oregon
When your claim to fame is America’s “Covered Bridge Capital,” you know you need to have your camera roll ready.

While fall may be the best time to visit little-known Cottage Grove, its small-town charm and lush wilderness pop up any time of year, whether it’s snow-capped pine trees or sun-drenched hikes through the clean, rainy air of the Pacific Northwest.
Cottage Grove is located just an hour south of Eugene, making for an easy trek into what can sometimes seem like unknown territory given the dense forestry.
There are countless lakes, rivers, and wooded trails just minutes from the city, connected by spacious charming covered bridges, where you’re sure to see plenty of Subarus pulling over for picture-perfect photos.

The city center is full of legendary storefronts, preserved facades, simple eateries and locally beloved breweries that tourists often miss when visiting this side of the US
Nehalem: Scenic river towns meet pristine coastlines
Nehalem may be a nameless town to many, but word on the street is that this little hideaway near Rockaway Beach is becoming a destination in itself rather than an itinerary add-on.
Lying along the aptly named Nehalem River, which extends to Nehalem Bay and into the Pacific Ocean, you can imagine the endless scenic waterfront no matter which side of the city you visit.

The most striking thing is Nehalem Bay State Park ($12 admission), as beautiful as any major national park, except you won’t see hordes of crowds taking selfies.
But both before and after exploring this city’s scenic sights, know that the main strip is packed with local boutiques, restaurants and hole-in-the-wall bars, but is best known to visitors and locals alike for its fish and chips.
Neskowin: No better place to do absolutely nothing
You may not have seen Neskowin pop up in guidebooks before – and that’s probably because there’s only one restaurant and one shop in town.

That goes without saying less is more here.
If big city life just isn’t your thing, escaping to this beach town with a map and booking a seaside cottage is the perfect place to relax on the beach, just as gorgeous as California.
But you’ll want to go further if that’s the ideal retreat. Neskowin has become a hot spot in large part thanks to a creepy “ghost forest” popping up on the coast, where more tourists are now making the journey for epic photos of this newly revealed eerie coastline.
Sisters: People Curvature Backwards to get here

Perhaps the trendiest small-town getaway in Oregon, Sisters has become the next best thing to Bend – a city known for its grand outdoor adventures and America’s last remaining city. Blockbuster store, believe it or not.
But it’s not Bend that feels like a movie set; it’s Sisters that exudes Old West charm all over town.
This rustic hideaway, half an hour’s drive away, has become a hotbed for travelers looking for clear skies for stargazing. homely cabinsand Oregon’s famous coffee culture, and of course more outdoor sensations, as the gateway to the Cascades, located on the edge of the Three Sisters Wilderness.
Not only has Sisters become a trendy haven for PNW locations, we also revealed last year that it was crowned a top 5 small town in all of America.
