President Donald Trump has unveiled a new centerpiece for the upcoming centennial celebration in the United States. On Thursday, the president announced plans for the “Patriot Games,” a nationwide youth athletics competition scheduled next fall as part of America’s 250th birthday in 2026.

According to Trump, the event is intended to showcase young athletic talent while framing the milestone anniversary as a celebration of national pride, competition and unity. The announcement comes as the government accelerates its broader vision for how the historic anniversary will be marked in federal institutions and public life.

What the Patriot Games will look like

In a video address from the White House, Trump described the Patriot Games as a four-day athletics show featuring standout high school students from across the country.

“In the fall we will host the very first Patriot Games,” Trump said. “An unprecedented four-day athletics event featuring the best high school athletes: a young man and a young woman from each state and territory.”

The match is expected to be televised and was first viewed by Trump in July. At the time, he said the event would be overseen by the Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.although specific logistical and operational details have yet to be released.

The announcement coincided with the launch of Freedom 250a newly introduced organization described as non-partisan and charged with coordinating the government’s planning for the 250th anniversary celebrations.

Not everyone has embraced the concept. Shortly after the announcement, some Democrats and online commentators mocked the idea. They drew comparisons with The Hunger Gamesthe dystopian novel and film franchise focused on televised youth competitions.

Those comparisons quickly gained traction on social media platforms. However, no elected Democratic leaders have formally challenged the initiative, and the White House has not responded directly to the criticism. For now, the administration appears to be focusing on positioning the Patriot Games as a unifying national moment rather than a political flashpoint.

The Patriot Games represent just one part of Trump’s expansive vision for the anniversary year. In the same announcement, the president also announced plans to begin construction of a Triumphal Arch monument in Washington, DC

‘We are the only major place without a triumphal arch’ Trump said. “A beautiful triumphal arch, one like in Paris… We will have one very soon in Washington, DC.”

Trump also reiterated plans for a UFC fight on the South Lawn of the White House, scheduled for June 14, a date that coincides with both Flag Day and the president’s birthday. According to Trump, UFC president Dana White will host the event, which is expected to feature championship-level fighters.

Federal agencies are falling in line

Over the past year, the administration has worked to align federal funding and programming with its 250th anniversary agenda, and agencies have followed suit.

The Department of Agriculture, for example, has embraced Trump’s Great American State Fair initiative. The concept was first introduced during the 2023 campaign and invites states to compete for recognition as the nation’s “most patriotic” fair.

Meanwhile, the White House has ordered a broad overhaul of the Smithsonian Institution, encouraging anniversary programming that, in the administration’s words, renews national pride in the museum complex.

What comes next

With just over a year remaining before official celebrations begin, many details surrounding the Patriot Games and related events remain unresolved. Still, the announcement makes one thing clear: spectacle, competition and symbolism will be central to Trump’s vision for America’s 250th birthday.

Whether the Patriot Games ultimately unite or divide public opinion, they have already accomplished one goal: setting the tone for a well-choreographed, closely watched national celebration.
