Shae Watson, left, and Kat Randolph had come out of their house in Brooklyn to see an exhibition about the choreographer Alvin Ailey in the Whitney Museum when I saw them on Little West 12th Street in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District on a Sunday afternoon in January. I was fascinated by the layered outfits they had assembled, who had clear sensitivities and showed their eye for detail.

The ensemble of Mrs. Watson included the Gebroeke of the Terrazzo print and a ribbed cardigan that she had bought secondly in Tokyo. Finish cowboy boots, which she called her version of sneakers. “I wear them everywhere,” said Mrs. Watson, 38,. Her dark green overcoat went nicely with the light green utility – that Mrs. Randolph, 31, wore with striped overalls – a nod to the rapper and musician André 3000, which she often wears, said Mrs. Randolph.

Mrs. Randolph added that her outfit was built around a “winter color scheme” from blues, blacks and greens. According to that palette, “something that lately connects me with my fashion,” she said.
