Want to know a travel secret that is surprisingly still a secret?
You don’t have to go to Florida for a wonderful beach holiday in the South.
This isn’t just another puff piece from a travel publication you’ve probably come across before – you know, the ones that extol the good while glossing over the bad.

Every place has its disadvantages. In this case, parts of the South are missing out on Florida’s Atlantic side.
But the Golf isn’t nearly as unpleasant as some say, unless you step on a dirty diaper like I did in Galveston – then it’s going to be a hard sell.
At Travel Off Path we prefer the full picture. So let’s take a deeper dive into three of the South’s unsung charmers and stunners who are leaving Florida’s unsightly hustle and bustle in the dust.
Holly Beach: Yes, Louisiana has beautiful beaches!
Louisiana is a wild place.

One of my many weekend pleasures is switching my phone to Do Not Disturb and watching my favorite vlog That Louisiana lifeabout a family enjoying an off-grid life on a houseboat in the picturesque swamplands full of alligators and other critters.
What you rarely hear about, however, are Louisiana’s few beaches along its lesser-known coastline.
In fact, it’s safe to say that many Americans don’t realize that the “Bayou State” has a coastline at all, instead imagining muddy waterways with modern dinosaurs and Mardi Gras shenanigans on world-famous Bourbon Street.

The reality is that Louisiana has its own underrated beach getaway at Holly Beach, a homegrown favorite that’s better than venturing next door to Texas and risking stepping on a soft diaper…
Hidden just over the Texas-Louisiana state line lies a mapped oasis known as the “Cajun Riviera,” making for one of the South’s most rewarding road trip destinations with beachfront RV parks, virtually no crowds in sight, and stilt houses for rent instead of flashy, eyesore resorts.
And yes – you can drive along the beach, and while the water isn’t generally clear, it’s a lot better than many skeptics think.
Bay St. Louis: the blissful hideaway on the Mississippi Bay

Mississippi has been such a hot commodity that I can almost spell “Mississippi” at this point without counting my S’s and P’s because we’ve discussed their shiny white beach towns so many times.
One day…
Bay St. Louis is the best of both worlds, combining small-town charm with days on the white-sand beach.
Yes, Mississippi waters aren’t exactly snorkelable. However, there are countless reasons why this trendy city has become one of the South’s fastest-growing resort destinations.
The most current reason would of course be Amtrak’s Mardi Gras routewhere you can jump around the Mississippi Sound between Mobile and New Orleans.

Bay St. Louis is a must visit, even if you choose not to stroll around here and fly into nearby Gulfport instead.
With serene beaches, spring break views and a charming cityscape full of simple eateries and cozy inns, you’ve found your next relaxing retreat, while others may dread the more popular beach location they’ve chosen.
Plus, after a few daiquiris at the local favorite Daiquiri ShakIf you squint, the soft white sand transitions to Siesta Key.
Don’t ask me how I know that…
Corpus Christi: Texas beaches are actually worth a visit

Last on our Tour de South tour is Corpus Christi, the biggest destination on our list.
Mixed with equal parts urban delights and surrounding paradise beaches that are truly as beautiful as some of Florida’s best escapes, don’t sleep on Corpus as your next sunny getaway.
In fact, this underrated city is slowly but surely working its way back up the travel rankings, as it recently added its first new flight in almost 3 decades.
That’s almost my entire life, but we don’t have to talk about that…
Downtown Corpus has undergone extensive renovations, giving this once overlooked city center a much-needed jolt away from the main attractions. USS Lexington And Texas Aquarium.

2026 is a great time to visit, not just because of the upcoming water crisis (uh-oh!), but also because it’s still well under the radar for vacationers craving sun and sand outside of Texas.
But it’s super fun. There is even one pirate festival that takes over the city center.
And that’s why I’ll be here in May, buddy!
That said, Corpus is a great gateway to the best beaches in Texas, including Mustang Island And Port Aransasboth worth visiting for their vast open spaces and often clear waters, no matter where you come from.
