Jennifer Lopez introduces a new manicure every week, sometimes bi- or even tri-weekly. And every cleaning job comes with the kind of fascination that takes the scrolling away and creates trends. This is thanks to both Lopez’s glamorous taste and her relationship with the longtime nail artist Tom Bachikthe mastermind behind some of the most viral mani moments of the year.
“With Jennifer it’s always about doing the best she can,” says Bachik. “She is very meticulous, so we try to make them as perfect as possible.” For Bachik, that means starting with a thorough manicure (no misshapen tips or dry cuticles here), consistent shapes, and healthy nails that nourish both his and Lopez’s sensitivity.
The two collaborate constantly, texting back and forth and usually repeating Lopez’s lavish signatures. “Jennifer likes it rich and stylish [style]. That is her overall aesthetic in everything she does,” says Bachik. “And then when we come into JLo, we get a little more extreme, a little more street, so it’s playing with what works for both.” A mid-length, tapered square serves as Lopez’s favorite silhouette (“This gives you an elegant look, because it elongates the finger a little”), while her current palette is all nudes — and shimmers (“she loves sparkle”) . Since the introduction of rich girl nails late last year, neutral colors and tonal looks have found favor with Lopez. “Perfect high-shine looking nails,” Bachik explains. “She really likes those earthy tones, taupe-like nudes.”
When conceptualizing a nail look, Bachik ensures that the manicure fits within the story, rather than trying to overpower it. “We sit down and analyze the look of the evening and ask, ‘Who do we want to be? How do we complete the look?’ because that’s what it comes down to,” he says. “Nails are the punctuation marks. Sometimes it’s a full stop, sometimes it’s an exclamation point.”
