The advisory comes amid heightened concerns that Tehran or its affiliated proxy groups could retaliate against US interests in the Gulf.

In a March 1 statement, the embassy confirmed that it “continues to maintain housing for all staff” and “recommends that all Americans do the same until further notice.” The alert explicitly warns that “the Iranian government and its allies may attempt to attack Americans in retaliation for U.S. attacks on Iran.”

The latest warning reflects a deteriorating security environment in the Middle East. The recent US military action against Iran-linked assets has intensified the already volatile standoff between Washington and Tehran. Security analysts note that Gulf states hosting US troops or military infrastructure could face increased risks in the event of retaliation.

Qatar, a key U.S. partner in the region, is home to Al Udeid Air Base, one of the largest U.S. military installations in the Middle East. The embassy has advised US citizens to avoid all military facilities and maintain a heightened awareness in public spaces.

Consular services suspended and safety measures outlined

The embassy has temporarily suspended routine consular services. All non-urgent visa and passport appointments scheduled for the week of March 1 have been canceledwith officials stating that updates will be communicated once normal activities resume.

Americans in Qatar are urged to take precautions, including identifying a safe location in their place of residence, maintaining adequate supplies of food, water and medicine, and ensuring communications equipment remains fully charged. The embassy also recommends monitoring local media and official announcements from the Qatari government for developments.

In its advice, the embassy emphasized the importance of vigilance and avoiding demonstrations or large gatherings. US citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time updates.

Emergency services in Qatar remain reachable by calling 999. The embassy’s main telephone line, including out-of-hours assistance, remains operational for urgent cases.

The US Department of State maintains one Level 3: Reconsider travel advice for Qatar, citing regional instability and evolving security risks.

The closure reflects broader regional security measures as Gulf states assess the potential impact of the intensification Confrontation between the US and Iran.

Travelers are advised to contact their airline directly regarding cancellation or rebooking options. Aviation authorities across the region are closely monitoring the situation.

While Dubai remains operational and its international airport continues to handle flights, airlines based in the United Arab Emirates have reportedly adjusted flight routes to avoid potentially sensitive air corridors. Officials emphasize that the situation remains fluid and subject to rapid change, and urge Americans in the region to prioritize safety and closely follow official guidance.
