Users on Reddit and Thai travel forums describe cases in which they paid hundreds of dollars to “consultants” who promised guaranteed approvalonly to receive invalid documents or no response at all. Several similar websites that use non-governmental domains (such as .com And .online) have been flagged by users as scams impersonating the official .go.th portals.
Similar concerns are emerging in Indonesia, where excitement over the E33G Visa for remote workers has led to an increase in the number of suspicious third-party ‘guarantee services’. In the Philippines where a visa framework for digital nomads is being rolled out until 2025, reports of ‘fixer’ scams are emerging in embassy appointment systems. These alleged agents promise “priority slots” or paid access to interviews, although government offices insist such services are not authorized.
Experts warn that these cases, while not formally documented or confirmed, reflect a growing vulnerability in the region’s thriving remote work ecosystem. The combination of new visa programs, high demand and limited experience of applicants creates fertile ground for exploitation.
Digital nomads are advised to use only official government websites, avoid off-platform payments and check any service provider through embassies or trusted online communities. The digital nomad visa movement continues to expand in Southeast Asia, but so do the risks that come with it.
