Trenčín, SlovakiaOulu, Finland

Europe is everyone’s destination for culture and Old World charm: after all, it is the continent of fairytale castles, cobbled streets frozen in time and world-class museums.

Between the picture-perfect medieval villages of France and the half-timbered houses of Germany, a plethora of options await you, and if you’re struggling to narrow it down, don’t worry: the European Union has already done some of the prep work for you.

Every year the EU crowns a lucky city as Capital of Culture, highlighting its historical significance, architectural value and legacy, and for 2026 not one, but two lesser known gemstones made the cut:

Trenčín, Slovakia

The first European Capital of Culture for the coming year is the relaxed, seriously overlooked Trenčín.

A small town in western Slovakia with about 55,000 inhabitants, Trenčín seems a living postcard: a charming medieval settlement located at the foot of a majestic hilltop castle, without the usual hustle and bustle you would expect in Europe.

The most iconic landmark is undoubtedly Trenčín Castle, perched high above the town on a rocky outcrop, complete with imposing towers, sturdy walls and numerous courtyards and secret passages for visitors to explore.

At the foot is that of Trenčín well-preserved old town is characterized by its cobbled streets, pastel-colored houses and inviting coffee shops. Speaking of which: Café Sládkovič, right on the main square, has the best espresso and a wide selection of cakes.

Despite its almost total anonymity, at least outside Slovakia, Trenčín is a city full of hidden gems, and perhaps that is why the European Union has chosen to highlight it this time:

The castle may be the most impressive building around here, but it’s not the only one:

The Parish Stairs, a covered passageway uphill that connects the old town to the castle, was built all the way back in 1568 and still serves its original purpose to this day. Katov stupidor Executioner’s House, is one intact Renaissance building now used as a museum.

Elsewhere, Mestská vežaSlovak for ‘City Tower’, it’s a 15th-century watchtower you can climb for stunning views of the medieval sprawl, and let’s not forget the monumental, Eastern-inspired Trenčín Synagogue, which brings elements of both Byzantine and North African influences.

Oulu, Finland

Oulu, a city in central Finland that most tourists to Lapland have never heard of, is located right at the point where the Gelid Oulujoki River flows into the Bay of Bothnia. In short, it is the perfect collision between Scandinavian urbanism and wild nature.

Unlike other European cities you might think of, Oulu doesn’t necessarily have a picture-perfect Old Town: don’t expect to find the ancient ramparts of Tallinn, nor the abundance of Baroque buildings in Prague.

The cityscape has survived many fires over the centuries and is largely representative of Scandinavian modernism. That said, there Are pockets of historic charm around Kauppatori, the waterfront market square, flanked by restored fishermen’s houses and craft workshops.

On Pikisaari Island, which is connected to the mainland by a footbridge, you’ll find even more quaint wooden houses, cozy cafes and a scenic waterfront walkway.

Oulu’s innovative museums are another testament to northern creativity, keeping the cultural scene alive even in the harsh winter months: for example, the Tietomaa Science Center is known for its interactive exhibitions and its exceptionally large 3D cinema screen.
