The best of both worldsHow affordable is Playa del Carmen for nomads?Safe and fast

What has long been a common vacation destination for tourists from Mexico has now become a haven for digital nomads.

Who can blame them for wanting the backdrop of turquoise water, swaying palm trees, and the sizzle of street tacos every day, while muting their sounds? Zoom calls, mastering the ‘nod and smile’ maneuver?

There are so many day trip destinations that are becoming famous right now, like Isla Mujeres, Valladolid and Akumal, but the one destination that has quietly evolved from day trip to digital nomad is Playa del Carmen.

This pristine paradise, sandwiched between Cancun and Tulum, is even easier to reach now that the Mayan Train is a (largely) reliable adventure.

Playa del Carmen has long been a Travel Off Path favorite, but what’s most surprising is how well-equipped and quite affordable it is to live there, despite its year-round popularity.

The best of both worlds

Sometimes it’s best not to live in the middle of the action. Take it from a “city lover” like me, who spent years dreaming of inner-city living, only to be constantly woken up by bass-thumping nightclubs, engine revs, and occasional screaming transients for no apparent reason.

Sure, it’s nice to walk around the block and have a cup of coffee or iced coffee in the morning cerveza at 5, but it’s not exactly “living the dream.”

Playa del Carmen has prime real estate. You have all the delights of the famous holiday destinations at your fingertips, while you can also travel north to Cancun, south to Tulum, or even east to the island of Cozumel.

Between work tasks or well-deserved free time, both cities offer a wide range of fun and discoveries.

Plus, the Mayan Train easily connects you to some of Mexico’s most hidden treasures that many tourists are only now discovering, like overlooked ruins in the shadow of Chichen Itza and otherworldly cenotes, less known than Bacalar.

Of course, there’s no shortage of nightlife either if that’s your jam. Whether it’s downtown Cancun, the boho beach clubs of Tulum, the island atmosphere of Cozumel or the bustling hustle and bustle of Playa’s Fifth AvenueOnce your laptop is shut down, you’ll be trading WiFi for margins in no time!

It’s not exactly a secret that many in the nomad scene are unbanked and often take on freelance work to make ends meet rather than living a mundane 9-to-5 life at home.

Playa del Carmen is surprisingly affordable and you don’t need to rent a car to save on costs.

The city is very walkable, which is why many remote workers strive for a centrally located apartment so you can walk to the beach or your favorite cafe or work with like-minded people downtown. co-working space.

There are conflicting reports about what it really costs to call this coastal dreamscape home. Nomads.com claims to have a budget of around $2800/month, while other nomad resources say you can live comfortably under $2000.

We’re narrowing the noticeable gap between necessities and vices – with so many beach bars and excellent cuisine, even if you’re on a budget, you might as well enjoy the taste even at the expense of a depleted savings account, right?

If one thing is certain, it is that cozy apartments can be purchased for around € 1,000. The rest of your budget is entirely up to you…

Cheers in advance. 🍻

Safe and fast

No nomad wants to live in a place where you constantly keep your head on the ground. Keep in mind that Cancun is Americans’ favorite international beach vacation, not only because of its unparalleled beauty, but also because of its impeccable safety.

The same can be said for Playa; otherwise it would be such a holiday hotspot.

Circling back to Nomads.comthey give high marks for other aspects that digital nomads are specifically looking for:

  • Welcoming foreigners ✅
  • Vibrant nightlife ✅
  • LGBTQ safety ✅
  • Air-conditioned housing ✅
  • Food safety ✅
  • Walkability ✅
  • Sun all year round ✅
  • Infrastructure ✅

The most important thing is that wifi is fast! It’s not perfect everywhere in terms of fiber, but you shouldn’t have a problem getting your work done before it’s time to end your day with a cocktail by the beach.

Mexico does not necessarily have a digital nomad visa, but you can live and work there informally with a standard tourist visa for up to 180 days.
