An East Coast icon has fallen, but despite not being in the South, it still plans to rise again.
It has one of the most battered reputations in the Tri-State region and can still show off as many casinos, boardwalks, and spinning Ferris wheels as it wants.
This former bustling playground doesn’t exactly exude the Jersey Shore atmosphere and is not typically Jersey at all. It has long tried to sell itself as the “Las Vegas” of the East Coast.

Few American cities have endured such a dramatic period of rise and fall.
That’s right – what we’re talking about Atlantic citya city that probably made you say to yourself, “Oh yeah, I forgot about that place.”
Determined to make a complete 180-degree comeback, Atlantic City is practically begging for more tourists to visit.
Does reality match the postcards?

The reality is that Atlantic City doesn’t exude the fun atmosphere you see on the postcards sold in nearly empty souvenir shops.
Its reputation in recent years is that it is run-down and struggles to attract both big names on stage and regular Joes to its beaches and slots.
Dilapidated buildings, vacant lots and a little too much evidence of hard times are not the welcoming sights you might expect from a city billed for thrill seekers.
But again, tension comes in different forms. I am fascinated while playing Word every morning, so there’s that…

Safety is a concern for visitors here, even though the classic beachfront promenade seems like a haven for family friends.
Far from the cotton candy stands, ice cream scoops and neon shirts that people buy for some strange reason, a downtown is full of eyesores, but the city is taking a shine with its new tourism campaign highlighting attractions beyond how much you can bet on red or black.
The city still has some work to do to win back vacationers, especially with so many other beaches in Jersey and the Northeast that feel more like paradise destinations under Atlantic City’s current reputation.
Beyond The Table Games: What’s the Appeal of Atlantic City?

I don’t know about you, but the first thing I think of when I imagine Atlantic City is the Vegas vibes that never let up as planned.
There are still a handful of industry big dogs, like Hard Rock and Caesars, but the city is determined (and perhaps downright stubborn) to promote its other must-dos.
Of course there are always beautiful beach days, especially now that summer has finally arrived.
Despite its reputation for being dirty, you might be surprised to know that it has a 4.5 star rating on Google, with recent beachgoers claiming things like “Nice time of year to visit – it’s warm enough to lie on the beach, everything is open and hotel prices are affordable during the week”.

But what the city is really counting on are regional events in hopes of filling those “affordable” rooms.
With a renewed focus beyond the casino floor, Atlantic City hopes to reframe itself as a base for exploring South Jersey, attending unexpected shows and concerts, and visiting restaurants that might surprise anyone who still thinks the city peaked at slot machines and buffet lines.
The campaign calls for:
- Shows
- Food/restaurants
- Traveling through South Jersey
- Concerts
Atlantic City’s biggest summer in years

While the city still needs a clean-up, it’s so far so good when it comes to attracting big names to a packed summer events calendar.
So good, in fact, that it’s reasonable to think that Atlantic City could even lure travelers from New York City.
Here are some of the biggest names worth keeping an eye on if you want to give Atlantic City another shot.
And yes, cheap hotels have cured a bad reputation.
