When you imagine a vacation in the South, you may think of many places.
The ‘Deep South’, as it is known, features timeless small towns with preserved plantations, while other locations boast paradisiacal beaches that hug the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean.
But there are many destinations that will surprise and delight you. When it comes to Texas, it’s not all barren highways or big cities that call Dallas, Austin, or “San Antone” home — there’s one place that has earned the title of the South’s new tourist hotspot.

Let’s say it is skyrocketing to new heights. That’s what we at Travel Off Path call foreshadowing…
Located near an underrated city known as the “Caribbean of Texas“You can experience insightful history, bi-national culture, epic beach days and a whole new kind of attraction that are giving Houston more trouble than ever.
Welcome to Brownsville: the South’s most unsuspecting vacation spot
Border towns are often depicted as abandoned, dirty and dilapidated. While that can certainly be said for some, Brownsville is not one of them – at least not now.
Located on the Texas-Mexico border, Brownsville proudly features multiple cultures through art, cuisine, and numerous celebrations held throughout the year.

But that’s not entirely why Brownsville is booming, even though it’s undeniably over because of the critical acclaim.
A diamond in the rough in the Rio Grand Valley, this college town/border town/hidden gem is one of the Lone Star State’s unsung getaways, especially if it’s just for a weekend.
Not to mention that it’s one of America’s sunniest destinations, and with beautiful beaches right next door, you don’t have to travel to Florida to mingle with retirees.
It’s convenient, welcoming, safe and quite affordable, whether you eat some tacos, visit an intriguing museum or book a name-brand hotel.
3 Notable Hotels Scheduled to Open in Brownsville

Speaking of hotels, they don’t just open anywhere; there must be demand.
Brownsville is already booming, mainly because it has a small airport connected to Dallas and Houston and a fairly easy drive from Austin, San Antonio, and even more so, Corpus Christi.
A new report from a local news source My RGV claims that a trio of hotels will open in Brownsville to alleviate the flooding of existing hotels due to the influx of tourists.
Expect these 3 hotels to open in 2027:
- Courtyard Marriott
- Hyatt Studios
- Embassy Suites (including a lazy river!)

Enjoy Beautiful beaches nearby
Texas may not be best known for its beaches, especially if Galveston is the first impression.
But South Padre Island lives up to its nickname “the Caribbean of Texas,” with beautiful blue waters, “white” sand that Texans might want to recategorize if they ever make it to Florida, and lovely beachfront hotels that draw crowds during spring break.
This is another reason why Brownsville is great to visit right now as one of America’s hottest destinations – to beat the spring break crowds when flights to Brownsville increase and hotels fill up.

This side of the Texas coast is full of surprises, including the lesser-known Port Isabel which was recently named one of Texas’s biggest surprises, especially if you’re a foodie.
SpaceX is creating new frontiers for South Texas
While people are practically knocking on NASA’s door looking for indistinguishable photos of what could be a possible alien invasion, SpaceX is thriving on the other side of Texas and even creating their own city, an almost unheard of concept these days.
That’s right – Starbase, Texas is now an official city in Texas, home to SpaceX launches that have drawn crowds to watch rockets rocket into the sky with surgical precision.

Under the leadership of visionary Elon Musk, SpaceX launches have become one of the South’s most popular attractions in the new era of space tourism.
Best of all, it is completely free to visit.
I mean, let’s be honest: It might send the wrong message to accuse people when you’re one of the richest people on Earth (and possibly one day on Mars).
For now, the best glimpse of the future is in a place you’d least expect: a new township in Texas, next to the Mexican border, that’s driving much of the tourism to Brownsville.
