No crowds and pure serenity in the most beautiful Meerstad in the Balkans365 churches: one for each day of the yearLake Ohrid: Maldiven-like water conditionsSubscribe to our latest messages

No chain restaurant steeped in, not a blit name of the name fire and certainly no composite nonsense that remove the authentic charm and the spotless landscape of his red binge cityscape.

It is rare to find a really hidden gem more, but that is what I found in 2023 when I came to Europe without clear plans.

Hearing the hype of Albania via social media, the neighboring country of North Macedonia, was a complicated in after I had eaten my way through Tirana.

Seeing a bus ride to Ohrid was just a few hours and costs a little more than my daily coffee budget, I decided to go to a city that I had never heard of – Ohrid.

Centuries old church along Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

It is one of the best travel decisions I have ever made, and not one of the typical “I could live here”, the impulses we all have.

No. I could Real Live here. And that also applies to other travel expertswho recently claimed Ohrid As one of Europe’s best spring onions.

It is amazingly beautiful, very affordable and public -free, Minus a select number of expats from neighboring countries.

This serene city city can still be reached a mainstream status, is still a secret for most. If you are looking for an unexpected paradise, you have found it in one of Europe’s least countries visited, but that is all part of the profession.

I have never been to Lake Como, but I bet that a spicy meatball 🤌 Ohrid is more beautiful. There is no way that there is a water body that is more enchanting in the Balkans; That’s for sure.

When I arrived, the first thing I did, my backpack was set up and walking through the city, and I couldn’t believe how open the timeless paved streets and the maze of alleys were.

After I just left Albania, I thought to myself: ‘People choose from That over this?! “.

In this way, the under -hyped city city stands as a time capsule, including interactions with the locals, where baristas may have to end their smoking break before taking your order (#priorities) and the taxi driver (no Uber here) can still have a few paragraphs in the newspaper before they start the meter.

Somehow, even as a spoiled American, none of these cases bothered me. It was actually a bit refreshing in a certain sense; A small memory to enjoy the little things.

Old town Is the highlight of the city insofar as the urban attractions go and there is no better place to look at the sunset than sitting on the pier, or a sidewalk café by the water. While the entire city illuminates an orange glow over the vast hills with red -ruled buildings, you will not mind crossing when you see what is in the store.

365 churches: one for each day of the year

If I have one advice to visit Ohrid, it is to pack comfortable hiking shoes.

Going through the old city is no problem, but as soon as you turn the corners and go uphill, your afternoon walk will certainly turn into a full walk.

Samuel’s Fort is undoubtedly worth the trip, especially if you reward yourself in the cozy café outside the entrance.

The views from here are incredible and that also applies to the craftsmanship of the fort itself, still strongly held from the beginning in the 11th century.

History runs deep in this city and you can’t miss it. There were once 365 churches and those who stay today have usually been well preserved, some are set cliffs and make more amazing photo-ops.

On the downside of the same coin there are also large mosques.

Lake Ohrid: Maldiven-like water conditions

Lake Ohrid is one of the most beautiful water bodies I have ever seen, and I live in San Diego!

The waters are crystal up close, but the shade of blue that it takes over from afar is so unique and inviting, Crayola should call a color behind it.

The only knock is that there is a little controversy if it is the same to swim. When I was there in 2023, there were a few swimmers, and the general consensus of the internet seems to agree that it is safe, but just knows that it is one of Europe’s deepest lakes.

Another great way to enjoy the lake is to book a boat trip, such as top rating Lake Ohrid CruisesStarting at $ 26.
