Why visit one state when you can conquer two in one weekend?

Well, we can’t call it a classic “Texas two-fer,” but we can call it double dipping.

That’s right: You can visit two states through one beautiful city that’s largely under the hype as a top Midwest destination.

Better known to the masses as a top sports city, even that idea collapsed when the NFL’s reigning dynasty ended its winning streak this season by failing to make the playoffs.

But even with the help of unofficial American Princess Taylor Swift, her occasional appearances haven’t reached this vibrant city packed with historic charmincredible cuisine and infectious sports obsession a popular holiday destination – at least not as popular as it should be…

‘We’re Not in Kansas Anymore’: Discover the Missouri Side From KC

Oddly enough, Missouri doesn’t come to mind with a name like Kansas City. However, that’s exactly where most people go when they visit.

Kansas City not only rivals fellow countryman St. Louis in sports, but also in vacation appeal. To be fair, KC is considered a lot safer than ‘The Lou’ as it is often called one of the most crime-ridden big cities in the US, but from word of mouth it seems that more travelers are opting for all the free attractions of St. Louis rather than considering Kansas City as a worthwhile destination.

Although Kansas City tourists will be happy to know Nelson-Atkins Art Museum is accessible free of charge.

But we’re here to tell you that you’ve been missing out on one of the Midwest’s most vibrant cities, packed with storied neighborhoods, beautiful architecture, lush parks and sensational barbecue so good you might need a bib (burnt ends are a must-try!).

On the Missouri side of KC, it feels more like a bustling metropolis, home to an array of trendy restaurants, insightful museums, major sports arenas (for now), name-brand hotels, and locally beloved neighborhoods to enjoy happy hours like Power and light and the Crossroads Arts District.

The Kansas side is on the rise!

It is unfortunate that those who have had the pleasure of visiting Kansas City often do not cross the state line into Kansas.

That said, Midwest living swears it’s on the rise and shouldn’t be missed.

For starters, the Kansas team just made waves as the new home for the Chiefs. Their new stadium is expected to open in 2031, forcing Missouri’s hand to embrace their neighbor.

‘Until then, Midwest Living was hyping the ‘Kansas’ in ‘Kansas City’ as a fun weekend getaway, and one you wouldn’t expect as this state is largely seen as sleepy and not worth visiting.

I mean, have you been to Topeka?

With family fun, outdoor adventures, fantastic food and surprising new hotels, you no longer have to stick to one state on your next KC trip.

Let’s start with the latter, shall we?

Besides hosting the Chiefs in the coming years, the most exciting news on the Kansas side lately is the 2025 opener Margaritaville Hotel Kansas City.

It’s true, you can now get a ‘cheeseburger in paradise’ without the ocean even in sight.

That is an addition to what already exists Large Wolf Lodge and rainforest theme Avalon Castle – some nice places to stay for all ages.

Barbecue doesn’t cross state lines either. Slap’s BBQwell, clap. Just don’t tell Chris Rock…

And who would ever have one taco pad?

By the time the new stadium is built, some would say the real Kansas City will surely develop even more over the next five years, making it a downtown rival.

Free things to do in both states

As we mentioned, St. Louis is known for its surprising amount of free attractions, but don’t sleep in the “City of Fountains” as KC is known to save some serious money, too.
