Given its newfound fame, more and more airlines are choosing this record-breaking destination as the place for thrilling escapes.

There will no longer be an extra stop needed to make your way to one of the most heavenly getaways in the United States.

That’s right, halftime show haters. Let’s not forget the loophole in Puerto Rico: no passport is needed!

You can pack up and leave, just like you would go to Miami, Chicago or Kalamazoo.

And now people from this booming Midwestern city can vacation here more easily than ever Indianapolis are welcomed first non-stop flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico, thanks to Southwest Airlines.

What the hell is going on in Indy? First, tourism is a record holder, and now Indianapolis International Airport (IND) has become the Midwest’s new hub for international beach vacations.

While the recently announced Puerto Rico route won’t launch until 2026, Indy has a few others to look forward to.

We don’t need Al Roker here to know how the Midwest becomes almost unbearable in the winter, unless you enjoy wearing four layers of clothing and shoveling your driveway every morning.

Airlines have taken into account that ‘Hoosiers’ need a better option than chasing retirees to Florida, and they have!

Indy welcomes four new flights to world-famous beach residents, from Mexico to the Caribbean:

  • Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (American Airlines – December 6, 2025)
  • Cancun, Mexico (Delta Airlines – December 20, 2025)
  • Los Cabos, Mexico (Southwest Airlines – March 5, 2026)
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico (Southwest Airlines – June 6, 2026 – Saturday only operations)

While not technically a beach destination, IND also recently welcomed Aer Lingus into the mix with an exciting new route “across the pond” to Dublin, Ireland.

They say rescue dogs are the best therapy. That is, until you get to a shredded passport, next to an overflowing toy basket for good measure…

Yes, my dog ate my passport, and I wished my trip the following week would be to Puerto Rico and not Puerto Vallarta, but hey, it worked out.

The thing is, keeping travel documents can be a hassle, and ‘hassle’ isn’t exactly the Caribbean’s selling point.

So, what better place than the passport-free US territory of Puerto Rico?

Most travelers fly to San Juan, the vibrant, historic capital resplendent with colorful facades, timeless streets, storybook sights and of course Puerto Rico’s fascinating culture and beautiful beaches.

Since Southwest’s newest route from Indy doesn’t debut until next summer, you’ll have plenty of time to delve into what to see, do, and eat (our favorite part of any trip here at Travel Off Path).

Grab your REAL ID, book a fun stay at one of the many charming boutique hotels or flashy resorts and unwind in paradise, indulging in an array of cultural delights and breathtaking coastlines, such as Isla Verde.

As my ex said about me: I am like an onion with too many layers, the same can be said for Puerto Rico – but in a good way…

While there’s certainly nothing wrong with basing your trip around San Juan, this amazing city, which combines a captivating history, vibrant nightlife, and affordable luxury, is also a diversion to other corners of the island that aren’t as well known.

Take Rincon for example. This beautiful seaside town is an even more affordable and quiet alternative to the hustle and bustle of popular San Juan.

Or take the lesser-known island of Vieques just off the coast, with black sand beaches and seemingly pristine turquoise waters, or the smaller town of Ponce with well-known resorts such as Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort.

Don’t let the cruise crowd fool you into thinking that San Juan is all Puerto Rico has to offer!
