Have you ever felt like you’re wasting time planning a trip, like you’re following the crowd while experiencing the same curated experiences?
Here at Travel Off Path, we realize that trips to places like Cancun, New York City, and Paris can all be phenomenal experiences, but often miss the element of surprise.
The truth is that the best destinations could be right under your nose, and all you have to do is look at them.

Such is the case for an underrated beach town on the outskirts of LA, better known for the strong bodybuilders of Venice, the quintessential SoCal vibe of Santa Monica and the laid-back luxury of Malibu (before another wildfire raged out of control)…
The thing is, few mention it Torrance as their next beach escape, whether it’s a day trip for fellow Californians like me, or a longer vacation easily accessible from one of SoCal’s many airports.
But there’s no doubt that those who’ve focused on LA’s glitzy and (dare we say) overexposed beaches have missed out on an incredibly underrated getaway full of vibrant coastlines and unsuspecting culture.
Discover SoCal’s crowd-free beach escape

Travel + Leisure recently with Torrance as one of the most underrated foodie scenes in California, but I completely missed how beautiful and tranquil the beaches here are, especially in the winter.
Not that Torrance is a global hotspot like the previously mentioned beaches, but in the summer it welcomes more locals who like to keep Torrance as their own piece of paradise.
With a long stretch of golden coastline from Torrance Beach to RAT Beach (an acronym for Right After Torrance), tourists who weaved through the crowds and gridlocked traffic could have relaxed by the sea without worry.

Most striking is that the The Palos Verdes Peninsulaa place that deserves a place with Malibu in terms of sheer beauty.
RAT Beach is located beneath the rolling cliffs of Palos Verdes. Hardly anyone outside of the LA suburbs and Orange County knows that this is the perfect place for a crowd-free getaway, unlike LA’s famous bustling beaches.
And if you’re lucky, you can even spot whales from shore this time of year. If not, increase your chances by booking a tour with Redondo Beach whale watching close by – expert guides since 1956.
Warm up in the ‘Ramen Capital’ of California

If there’s one thing tourists who have never visited California before should know, it’s that our beaches may be beautiful, but they’re often too cold for a nice swim, hence the surfers in wetsuits.
As we close the final chapters of 2025, temperatures are still warm and the famous California sun is still shining, but once the sun sets, it’s still sweater weather in SoCal.
What better way to warm up than with a steaming hot bowl of perfectly crafted ramen?
Torrance is the undisputed ramen king despite the more popular Asian enclaves in LA’s city limits, like tiny Little Tokyo downtown and the ever-so-trendy K-Town, where it’s also nearly impossible to find a bad meal here.

But it’s Torrance who takes the (green tea) cake. In fact, this city is so loved for its windows that they have their own ramen-pad to view the top positions, as best rated Hakata Ikkousha.
Since the German-inspired Alpine Village closed its doors in recent years, Torrance has showcased a surprising range of cultural delights given its diverse community, whether it’s a burgeoning craft beer scene, authentic izakayas or local favorite Cultural Cherry Blossom Festival held every spring.
As Travel + Leisure put it, Torrance (and nearby Gardena) has “the largest Japanese-American population in the US outside of Hawaii,” so you know you’ll always eat well!
Day trip or mainstay?

Most Southern Californians come to Torrance to feast on sensational international cuisine or shop at one of America’s largest malls. Del Amo Fashion Center.
You won’t find any flashy resorts here, just the usual fare of popular hotel chains.
If you’re taking day trips, Los Angeles is notorious for its headache-inducing traffic.
That said, there are numerous airports you can fly into, so you can try to minimize traffic if you’re sold on Torrance as your mainstay.
That’s right: you can avoid the chaos of LAX if you want, even though it’s closest in mileage to Torrance.

Of course, anyone who has sat in LA traffic knows that a 10-mile drive can easily be an hours-long rush hour nightmare.
Other arrival options:
- Long Beach (LGB) – approx. 25 minutes away
- Santa Ana (SNA) – approx. 45 minutes away
- Ontario (ONT) – approx. 55 minutes away
- Carlsbad (CLD) – approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes drive
However you arrive, the aforementioned Palos Verdes is home to one of the most underrated places in California 5 star resorts a short, scenic drive from Torrance — Terranea Resort.
