US embassy in Italy issues travel warning due to large demonstrations

ROME — The U.S. Embassy in Italy has done just that issued a travel advisory ahead of major demonstrations expected to attract tens of thousands of participants in the center of Rome on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

According to the embassy’s alert, an estimated 30,000 people will gather in Piazza della Repubblica at 3 p.m. before marching towards Piazza di Porta San Giovanni. The march, which aims to raise awareness and demand an end to gender-based violence, is expected to end at 8 p.m.

Italian authorities expect a strong police presence throughout the city center to manage the flow of participants and ensure public safety. Although organizers have described the demonstration as peaceful, officials warn that large crowds could lead to traffic disruptions and temporary delays in public transportation.

The US Embassy advised Americans in Rome to avoid areas affected by the march and remain vigilant. Travelers are urged to exercise caution, remain aware of their surroundings and monitor local news for real-time updates.

“Individuals should exercise good situational awareness, maintain control of personal belongings and attempt to leave affected areas immediately,” the embassy said in its advisory.

The demonstration coincides with global events marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a day celebrated annually on November 25.

Public transportation, including bus and metro lines that run through the city center, may experience diversions or delays during demonstration hours.

Why are the protests taking place?

The most important rode as these protests demand an end to gender-based violence, timed to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25.

The demonstration in Rome is part of a coordinated national movement led by the feminist group Non Una di Meno and seeks to draw public attention to the persistent problem of violence against women and patriarchal structures in Italy.

The organizers describe their meeting as transfeminist and intersectional, with the aim of highlighting the need for legal changes and greater societal commitment to combating all forms of gender-based abuse and discrimination. In the days leading up to the event, various cultural and educational activities focused on these themes will also take place throughout the city.
