We at Travel Off Path reported one of the best idyllic escapes from the crowds of San Francisco a few months ago, whereby the curtain was dropped off for the charming urban island of Alameda.

Since then, more travel experts (not so insightful, of course 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 😜 more, as the best outing of San Francisco.

Boats on Petaluma, Ca Waterfront

Lie north of the bay PetalumaAn unknown city for the masses and even fellow Californians like me. To be honest, I was surprised to see a no-step as a top 10-American destination and number one in the “Golden State”.

As part of CNN’s ‘America’s best town to visit 2025’ Feature, Petaluma was perhaps the biggest surprise; Not in the sense of people who want to escape from the madness of San Fran, but that it is arranged so high with little to no fame.

Dive deeper into the attraction of Petaluma, it is clear that many travelers have missed the joys of this little known city, Down-home charm and epic food, even nestled between one of America’s most culturally rich cities, where finding a bad meal is almost impossible.

A gold mine of fantastic food

If there is one common denominator, Petaluma seems to have among visitors and travel guide critics, then it is food.

Petaluma is best known for farm-to-table selections, but the diversity will also surprise you.

CNN Hyped Up TrunkA mix of Swedish and Midden -Eastern pleasures in a place that you would expect the least, surrounded by the rustic charm of the Petaluma district.

The nostalgic atmosphere of Petaluma dates from the Gold Rush from the 19th century. While gold tikers certainly ate when royalty, the past of Petaluma offers much more than what is currently on menus.

In fact, holding on to the subject of food, Petaluma was previously known as the ‘egg basket’ worldwide as a national leader in egg and poultry.

Unfortunately they still can’t tell us what came first – the chicken or the egg. Maybe AI will solve that soon …

Anyway, eggs are often the most important ingredient for every sultry meal, and Petaluma has continued to make a name for itself in the food scene, so that San Francisco’s lively, cultural neighborhoods get a run for their money and the surrounding wine country.

Although the Lagunitas Taproom is a well -known name, it surpasses the Boozy offer of the neighboring city.

In CNN’s own words: “You could spend two weeks in Petaluma and not be able to eat all the wonderful eateries in the city.”

Challenge accepted.

Zoom in on the map of your phone, choose a name that sounds seductive and you will definitely find something that suits you.

Enjoy Waterfront pleasures along the Petaluma -River

While most boat trips reach to Alcatraz, there is a very different way to enjoy the waters to the north for an hour.

Reading through the city center is one thing, and certainly pleasant, feeding your day in a cozy café or throwing your credit card out of a local boutique, but enjoying the Petaluma river gives a whole new dimension to the center with airy patio dining and aquatic excursions pleasure for all ages.

Summer is also a good time to visit, because Norcal comes a little nippy in the fall. Expect consistent days from 80 degrees to September before the pumpkin plasters take over parking spaces.

Some of the best ways to enjoy Petalumas picturesque waterfront are by visiting The Floathouse Petaluma Boat Rental CenterA hub for exciting activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding and even hydrobikes (they are super fun!).

From July Rvertown Revival Has been over and saw the biggest crowd all summer, but it is something exciting to keep an eye on the next time you are in the area.

Then of course there are countless places to enjoy the sun and the landscape in places such as:

Best of both worlds: Gateway to San Fran & Wine Country

One thing that you will undoubtedly like about Petaluma is the lack of crowds, but so close to two remarkable destinations, it is a difficult sale to stay in one place with so many iconic attractions in the neighborhood.

Petaluma is about an hour’s drive from the center of San Francisco and only 20 minutes to Sonoma, an underrated wine city in the shade of Napa.

It is clear that San Francisco has seen the wrong side of headlines for years. As a recent visitor, I can confirm that it is a lot better than the chaotic days of the pandemic, as long as you avoid the ugly district of the tenderloin.

As far as Sonoma is concerned, it is always a nice place to visit for a relaxing day that narrowly sips adult grape juice without a shortage of wineries to choose from.

For the ultimate surprise, however, I cannot tell you enough how much I enjoyed my recent trip to San Jose. Although it is more a trek to reach than San Fran and Sonoma, it is full of surprises and worth the 90 -minute ride.
