You might think it strange if the first sentence of an article from California talks enthusiastically about the Mediterranean, but we all know that this is one of the dreamiest regions in the world for a paradise holiday.
While Greece, Cyprus and a wealth of sunny paradises provide a worthwhile adventure, Santa Barbara is a lot closer to home and offers much of the same charm.
It’s true that here on the west coast you’ll find a lively, laid-back atmosphere seemingly plucked from the Mediterranean.

There are countless reasons why one of California’s most sought-after escapes to kick back and recharge found its success. best tourist year everbut this is a rare place where you will indeed feel like you need a passport with its Mediterranean-inspired aesthetic and picture-postcard coastlines.
With new flights, decadent wineries, tranquil beaches and much more, let’s unpack why beautiful Saint Barbara welcomed a record number of 1.4 million passengers last year.
The antidote to LA’s urban grind
Ever been to LA? It’s one of the most hectic cities in America to navigate, as this so-called “city” is made up of dozens of suburbs that never seem to end.


The chaos and well-documented spike in crime send Angelenos north up the coast to Santa Barbara, long a favorite among Hollywood stars and now for everyday people to unwind.
It’s the perfect weekend getaway destination – just an hour and 45 minutes from downtown, 2 hours and 15 minutes from Orange County and about 3 hours from San Diego itself.
Although it’s most convenient to LA, all of SoCal has the allure of Santa Barbara. There are Spanish colonial sights to explore, wines from the Santa Ynez Valley to enjoy, and countless beaches calling your name, and always something exciting at the 102-year-old Granada Theatre.
SB’s coastline is truly blissful with wide sandy beaches and largely swimmable waters.


It’s a postcard in motion as surfers carve waves and lifeguards lather their washboard abs, just like in the movies — except no one says “cut.”
It’s certainly worth a road trip, but Santa Barbara also goes beyond its long-standing Pacific Highway identity.
Santa Barbara Airport is in turmoil, welcoming new flights, which could mean an even better year for 2026.
New flights = new hype
The beaches may be quiet here, but don’t expect to see plane-free skies over Santa Barbara anytime soon.
This beautiful beach is undergoing a massive expansion to best compete with California’s big dogs.


To do this, they must go beyond just a road trip haven along the world-famous Highway 101.
That said, a new one report It is claimed that five airlines will launch a combined 13 non-stop destinations in the first half of 2026.
Not too shabby for such a small airport…
As such, even San Diegans like me are more likely to go there simply to skip the LA traffic, which we all know can make a monk swear like a sailor on the 805.
Most of the new routes run along the West Coast, but even Salt Lake City and Chicago are participating.


Santa Barbara becomes a springboard
When your friend tells you he or she is on vacation in Santa Barbara, you immediately know where he or she is going.
However, there are also many surrounding destinations that are starting to make a name for themselves.
You may have heard of such a place that every publication and their mother claim is a must-visit holiday destination for its charming European atmosphere, and rightly so.
Solvang is as close as you can get to Scandinavia without a passport. This Danish-inspired village is just 45 minutes from Santa Barbara, making it an easy addition to any trip.


But there are a handful of others, like the little-known town Buelltonpacked with surprisingly adventurous attractions, like California’s fastest and longest zipline and even an ostrich farm – although its most notable claim to fame is the site of an Oscar-winning film Sideways was filmed.
Better yet, you can even stay at the hotel from the movie, The Sideways Inn. Unfortunately, there’s no discount for showing off your best Paul Giamatti impression, but hey, it never hurts to ask…
Of course, if you were one of the many to watch Sideways You used to know how underrated this region is for great wine.


Napa will be far from your thoughts with beautiful cities like Lompoc, Santa Ynez and of course Santa Barbara itself.
