Broken cobblestones, overhanging wires between candy-colored colonial mansions, the loud chatter of the street markets and the smell of fried arepas filling the air: There’s nothing like a Latin American getawayYes.
Unfortunately, it’s not like the best of Latin America is easily accessible to Americans. Yes, you can fly directly to Rio or Mexico City, and as beautiful as they are, you can’t ignore the fact that the crowds (and high prices) are a major disadvantage.
If you’re heading to the lower, warmer half of the world this winter, here are 4 lesser-known gems yet to be spoiled by mass tourism that you can fly to non-stop from the US:

Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Belo Horizonte, the capital of the underrated state of Minas Gerais in Brazil’s interior, is a sprawling metropolis with vibrant covered markets, artsy neighborhoodslush city parks and unparalleled gastronomy. Seriously, once you try it myiro food, you will never see Rio the same way.
Every visit to Belo Horizonte should start with Mercado Central, the heart of the city, and your favorite place for tasting local products, from cheese and other street snacks to the world famous cachaça.
‘Beagá’ is also known as the Brazilian bar capital, and stands out from it boteco Unpleasant boteco around the Savassi and Lourdes neighborhoods is the best choice to mingle with the locals and get a feel for the local, relaxed nightlife.


Not to be missed: the Pampulha Modern Ensemble is on the UNESCO World Heritage Lista collection of modernist structures designed by Oscar Niemeyer, including the monumental São Francisco de Assis Church, located on a picturesque lakeside.

Quito, Ecuador


Quito, Ecuador’s well-preserved colonial-era capital, is home to a UNESCO-listed historic center, a neo-Gothic church that rivals Europe’s in beauty, and hilltop viewpoints with postcard-like vistas.
The Basilica del Voto Nacionala national symbol of Ecuador, it towers over the red-roofed mansions of the downtown area, and features creepy-looking gargoyles in the shapes of Ecuadorian animals.
Around the colonial core, one of the best preserved in Latin Americayou will find other showstopper baroque churches including La Compañía de Jesúsalmost completely covered in gold leaf, cafe-lined squares and historic monasteries.


For an epic view of the city, head to Quito’s TeleferiQotraveling to the slopes of the neighboring Pichincha volcano, and for the classic tourist selfie, Mitad del Mundo is a landmark in the city where you can stand both hemispheres: literally the ‘middle of the world’.

Santiago, Cuba


Often overlooked in favor of Havana, Cuba’s best-known and perhaps most iconic city, Santiago should not be written off too easily.
It was founded by the Spanish in 1515 and is located among the oldest cities in America. The timeless colonial masterpieces, with baroque churches and colorful buildings in abundance, make it one vibrant Caribbean hub begging to be discovered.
Guarding the entrance to Santiago Bay, Castillo del Morro is a historic fortress that has protected Santiago from pirate attacks since the 18th century, and it is definitely worth a visit.
Standing in the colonial core of the city, La Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is perhaps the most striking feature of Santiago’s otherwise even skyline, with soaring towers, vaulted ceilings and Baroque details.


Nearby, the greenery Parque Cespedes is true abuelos gather to play chess and people watch. As for young people, find them mingling with gringosand try out their dance moves at Casa de la Trovaa nighthouse known for its live Cuban music performances.
