Medieval charm abounds in Malta, but there are so many captivating places that it’s hard to take it all in, even on a small island.
There’s no shortage of beaches either; that’s for sure! One beautiful dot on the map more than 40 beaches the area is an absolute delight to visit, combining stunning architecture with vibrant blue water (or vice versa).
Better yet, as temperatures continue to drop in the coming months, it’s one of the most reliable destinations for winter sun.
Malta’s Mdina was the island’s former capital, and although that has since changed, its well-preserved wonders and unspoilt coastlines make this slice of paradise Europe’s most underrated winter getaway.
Europe’s sun-drenched savior from freezing winter temperatures
Some say Malta is essentially an extension of Italy, with similar atmosphere, architecture and cuisine.
Although there are certain similarities, Malta holds its weight against its Mediterranean counterparts, especially when it comes to its Old World aesthetics and incredible beaches.
Travelers can expect consistent temperatures ranging from the 60s to mid 70s over the next few months as we are all at home shoveling our driveways or cozying up by the fireplace.
Mdina, although small, is centrally located and offers easy access to 43 beaches to choose from –
Little Armier Beach, Ramla Bay and Dahlet Qorrot Beach are some of the favorite spots of locals and tourists for sun and sand, but don’t miss this spot Dingli Cliffs for beautiful views of the coast.
However, many on TripAdvisor claim that you really can’t go wrong if you visit one of Mdina’s nearby beaches as they are all postcard-worthy, especially at sunset when you better have your camera ready to capture one of the best capture sunsets of the Mediterranean.
Here in Mdina there are only about 250 residents and tourists live according to their own schedule. No one is in a hurry; they just enjoy the Mediterranean life.
That’s one reason why some travelers who have come here have encouraged fellow tourists not to rush their visit. A recent visitor said: “Mdina is a real treasure – definitely worth a longer visit.”
Funky old Mdina
Mdina is so breathtaking that it was nominated as a filming location for Game of Thrones, so the next time you binge watch one of America’s biggest hit TV shows, keep an eye out for these historical sights:
- Mdina Dungeons
- Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Paul
- Historic house museum Palazzo Falcon
- Mdina Metropolitan Cathedral Museum
Not to mention that the city is also called the ‘silent city’ because there are no cars here, so walking through the timeless cobbled streets is obviously the best choice.
Mdina dates back to 700 BC, but one of its most intriguing periods takes place during Roman times, when it was the capital of Malta but was ravaged by an earthquake in the 17th century.
The city was rebuilt in the Baroque style we all know and love, giving the small townscape an added boost for photo opportunities.
You could even argue that Mdina could pass for a mini ‘Dubrovnik’ as it is still walled like a modern inland fortress and beholds a charming old town, even if it is quite small as you might imagine.
Wine & Dine: Maltese cuisine holds its own compared to Italy and Greece
You can go back and forth all over the US, but you probably won’t come across many Maltese restaurants.
The only Maltese you’re likely to find are the white fluffy puppies of the same name, one of which I had growing up. (RIP muffin)
Although Mediterranean cuisine is quite popular, Maltese cuisine is difficult to find unless you are on holiday in Malta.
While tourists often praise the island’s extensive food culture, Mdina has a unique advantage.
The local wine bars offer a delicious way to sample local favorites, right in the city. You’ll be shocked at how such a small area can pack a punch for your taste buds.
Start your day on a picturesque sidewalk cafe with a fresh brew and end the day with an epic dinner featuring some local favorites, such as:
- Lampuki cake
- Stuffat tal-Fenek
- Minestra
Travel tip: For the ultimate wine experience, visit Cortis Vineyards for a tour of what also happens to be one of Mdina’s most beautiful locations.
