One of the aspects of travel that personally saddens me is how often Mexico is misrepresented.
The mainstream news seizes on every negative event with a tight fist, painting an ill-informed picture of one of the most fascinating countries in the world.
But the truth is that most of Mexico is safe; otherwise millions of tourists would not return home unscathed with unforgettable holiday memories.
While beach destinations are incredible to visit, many of the country’s hotspots lack authentic culture, which is a real shame (apologies to Sammy Hagar).
Mexico City may be the mecca where you can enjoy an array of culinary masterpieces and witness some of the country’s most fascinating sites, but a historic city just a few hours away will blow your mind to go.
Safe, cheap and beautiful with incredible architecture and traditions, Puebla makes for a perfect escape to experience Real Mexico, and even places like Guadalajara and Oaxaca, have become touristy.
One of the best cities in Mexico for affordability and safety
There’s no need to keep your head spinning as you wander the wonders of Puebla; the US Department of State confirms that Puebla is very safe.
Similar to many other popular destinations Level 2, you can explore in comfort as you would just about anywhere.
That’s not to say there aren’t bad apples, but Puebla is a far cry from Mexico’s “dangerous” reputation, aside from the safe havens of Cancun and Los Cabos themselves.
Puebla’s historic city center makes a great base, and both the luxury and boutique hotels in the area offer fantastic values.
Clad in colonial structures of Talavera tiles and meticulous details, you will forget the glitzy resorts of Mexico and be captivated by the city’s timeless atmosphere, all while saving money!
Stay in luxury at Quinta Real Puebla this winter for great prices of $76 or perhaps for a cozier feel the Casa Rosa Gran Hotel for $42 in December.
If you’re staying in the city centre, it’s best to navigate on foot so no stone is left unturned, as there are numerous lively streets lined with lively bars, traditional eateries and artisan shops – all of which are also inexpensive.
Moreover, this city is a paradise for foodies!
Should you venture outside the city limits, Puebla also has Uber, which is usually cheaper than taxis which can pull the classic ‘my meter is broken’ tactic on obvious tourists.
Although the locals are generally regarded as warm and very helpful to visitors.
Phenomenal cuisine and fascinating history
There are world-class Mexican eateries all over the US, and what you may not know is that many chefs from Puebla are bringing traditional flavors to the United States.
Puebla is often considered the home to some of Mexico’s most renowned cuisines. Celebrity chef and world traveler Anthony Bourdain even visited Puebla during one of his first episodes to showcase the region’s different dishes, such as Mole Poblano, a must-try during your trip.
In other words, it’s impossible to go hungry in this city as every meal is a delight for your taste buds (and don’t skip the cocktails either!).
Be sure to make a reservation at Mochomos Puebla for an unforgettable meal; it’s one of the top-rated restaurants in the city with an impressive Google rating of 4.9 with over 10,000 reviews.
Coming back to your travel budget, Puebla offers many free attractions, such as many open-air parties and incredible cathedrals.
Because it is so striking, you cannot resist entering one of the many churches, regardless of your faith, just to admire these architectural wonders.
Be sure to visit Puebla Cathedral, Santo Domingo Church, and La Compañía Church, to name a few.
What may be even more fascinating for some is the nearby town Cholulabut don’t get too excited thinking this place is home to the popular brand of hot sauce.
Cholula’s claim to fame isn’t its delicious red pepper; it is home to fascinating ruins including the world’s largest pyramid – take that Egypt!
Getting to Puebla is easy
Mexico City offers the most flight options direct from the US, but you can also fly non-stop from a number of US cities (one of which is the ultimate travel hack).
Houston and San Diego (via Tijuana) are currently your only non-stop options. United flies nonstop from Houston, while both Viva Aerobus and Volaris fly from Tijuana, which can be accessed by Southern Californians by never setting foot across the border with the convenient Cross Border Xpress.
However, if you fly into Mexico City, you will have to board a bus or take an expensive Uber or taxi.
According to Busbudbus fares this winter range from $6 – $23.
