In 2023, Greece was practically begging for digital nomads to flock to the country’s iconic ancient sites, bustling cities and postcard beaches.
Despite Athens, countless islands and the new coastal hotspot being hyped as a top destination, there are still dozens, if not hundreds, of hidden Greek gems waiting to be discovered.
Nomad Embassy recently showcased quite a few options for digital nomads, ranging from the most famous city of them all, Athens, to perfect beach towns you’ve probably never heard of.
Once you get there, you’ll feel right at home in paradise, and if Greece stays true to its wishes, they’ll roll out the red carpet for you as your new home away from home.
I was lucky enough to visit one, a place that has long been immortalized in my mind. To be honest, I enjoyed it even more than the world famous Santorini.
Digital nomads will fall in love with these 3 Greek coastal cities:
Heraklion: a dupe from Athens, radiant with history and unspoilt coasts
Athens is one of the real superpowers of Europe. There’s really no place that can live up to the city’s monumental timeline and well-preserved wonders.
That said, Athens has become so popular that it is also one of many destinations that suffer from overtourism, especially in the summer months when more travelers have vacation time to get around.
While there is no such thing as Athens 2.0, Heraklion 1.0 is the next best thing. The largest city on the island of Crete features fascinating ruins without the crowds like the lesser-known ones Palace of Knossos.
With a mix of timeless sights, relaxed living and breathtaking blue water coastlines, digital nomads will be magnetized by all that Heraklion has to offer, especially with new additions to suit their lifestyle, such as top-rated coworking spaces like Comet creative space.
Café culture is anchored in daily routines, so you always have a cozy workspace. Many of these are on the waterfront with breathtaking views and Mediterranean breezes Mare coffee bar and food.

Chania: the azure blue city of Crete, perfect for digital nomads
Sticking with Crete, the smaller city of Chania is a dynamo in its own right and fits perfectly with the nomadic life.
I visited Chania 7 years ago and feel like not much has changed since my first impression was that time stands still here.
If you’re the type to go with the flow, Chania is the place to be. I remember walking around around 8am looking for some much needed caffeine and still not being able to find any cafes that were open as locals tend to live by their own clock.
It is the ultimate relaxing destination, which is also stunningly beautiful.
I would love to share photos from my trip but I was accompanied by my ex, Chania’s only kryptonite who sours the otherwise perfect memories by exploring the cobbled walkways of the old town, enjoying good wine and cheap ‘catch of the day’, and watching the sunset over the harbour Nostos Hotel.
In and around Chania there are some incredible beaches that you can combine with the perfect work-life balance in Chania.
These 3 beaches are my top recommendations:
- Balos Beach
- Falassarna Beach (pink sand!)
- Elafonisi beach
Nomads Embassy notes that the locals of Chania are very hospitable, which I can attest, and are equipped with reliable WiFi throughout the city.
Nafplio: Greece’s hidden gem, ready to embrace digital nomads
Returning to concerns about overtourism, Nafplio would be the antithesis. How a city worthy of being on your desktop screensaver stays under the radar is beyond explanation, but perhaps digital nomads can shine the spotlight on this Greek hidden gem.
Nestled in the Peloponnese region, this tranquil town of red-tiled houses, vibrant blue waters and undeniable charm will have you going crazy, especially if you sample the local cuisine and cheap wine.
Despite being unknown, Nafplio is surprisingly willing to embrace remote workers with plenty of cafes and coworking spaces, great work-life balance, and affordable apartments.
According to Spitogatosa Greek real estate company, digital nomads can score One bedroom apartments from $300 per month!
Although you will probably spend most of your time in cozy cafes or on one of the many breathtaking beaches, such as Karathona Beach, Tolo Beachor Kondyli Beach.
